Windows 10: Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application support ends today

Our new modern browser, Microsoft Edge, debuted over a year ago and today can be found on hundreds of millions of devices. Last August, we announced that Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application support would end on March 9, 2021 as part of this transition to the new Microsoft Edge. Today, Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application support officially ends, and it will no longer receive future security updates.

Additionally, we announced that the now out-of-support Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application will be removed and replaced with the new Microsoft Edge when customers apply Aprils Windows 10 cumulative monthly security update (or B release). New Microsoft Edge replace Microsoft Edge Legacy in Windows 10 April

In August 2020, we announced that support for the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application

ends on March 9, 2021. After this date, Microsoft Edge Legacy will no longer receive security updates.

To replace this out of support application, we are announcing that the new Microsoft Edge

will be available as part of the Windows 10 cumulative monthly security update—otherwise referred to as the Update Tuesday (or “B”) release—on April 13, 2021. When you apply this update to your devices, the out of support Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application will be removed and the new Microsoft Edge will be installed. The new Microsoft Edge offers built-in security and our best interoperability with the Microsoft security ecosystem, all while being more secure than Chrome for businesses on Windows 10.

Note: This replacement will also occur if you apply the optional Windows 10 March Preview (or “C”) release.

What Windows 10 versions will be impacted?

This will be a part of the Windows 10 Update Tuesday (or “B”) release on April 13, 2021 for the following Windows 10 versions (other versions will follow):

Windows 10, version 1803, all editions (April 2018)

Note: This version will not be included in the optional Windows 10 March Preview release.

Windows 10, version 1809, all editions (October 2018)

Windows 10, version 1903, all editions (May 2019)

Note: This version is out of support for desktop

Windows 10, version 1909, all editions (October 2019)

Windows 10, version 2004, all editions (May 2020)

Windows 10, version 20H2, all editions (October 2020)

Because Windows 10, 20H2 already uses the new Microsoft Edge as its default browser, it will not be reinstalled; only Microsoft Edge Legacy will be removed.

Will this impact Windows 7 or Windows 8.X?

No, Microsoft Edge Legacy was not available for Windows 7 or Windows 8.X. This will only impact the Windows 10 versions listed previously.

What if the new Microsoft Edge is already installed?

If the new Microsoft Edge is already installed, applying this update will not reinstall the new Microsoft Edge and will only remove Microsoft Edge Legacy.

Can I still run Microsoft Edge Legacy and the new Microsoft Edge as a side-by-side experience after this update?

Because Microsoft Edge Legacy will no longer be on devices after you apply this update, the side-by-side experience will no longer be available.

Can I skip this update?

We do not recommend skipping this update. Windows cumulative monthly security updates provide critical updates to the Windows 10 operating system.

What will the end user experience be like?

Your Windows 10 defaults and personalization, such as your default browser or taskbar pins, will be respected (e.g. if you had Microsoft Edge Legacy pinned to the taskbar, this would be replaced with the new Microsoft Edge).

I use kiosk mode in Microsoft Edge Legacy—how will this affect me?

You will need to set up kiosk mode in the new Microsoft Edge. Please see this blog for details and recommendations for kiosk mode.

Will this affect other apps that use EdgeHTML?

EdgeHTML—the rendering engine for Microsoft Edge Legacy—will continue to be supported. To develop apps for the new Microsoft Edge, use WebView2, the Chromium-based version of Microsoft’s WebView.

If I use a private WSUS server for updates, how can I keep the new Microsoft Edge up to date?

After the update is installed, the new Microsoft Edge will check for and install updates automatically via its own updater. This requires an internet connection. If you manage devices that connect to a private WSUS server, you can use the updates for the new Microsoft Edge in the WSUS catalog to keep these devices up to date. See our guide for managing Microsoft Edge with Configuration Manager for more information.

What do I need to do?

We recommend that you update to the new Microsoft Edge prior to support ending for Microsoft Edge Legacy on March 9, 2021. For guidance, please refer to this Docs page. If you use kiosk mode in Microsoft Edge Legacy, you will also need to set up kiosk mode in the new Microsoft Edge.

If you decide to wait, Microsoft Edge Legacy will be replaced with the new Microsoft Edge when you apply the Windows 10 Update Tuesday (or “B”) release.

Note: This replacement will also occur if you apply the optional Windows 10 March Preview (or “C”) release.

Windows 10 sunsets Microsoft Edge Legacy

Today, we’re announcing that Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) by this time next year.

Beginning November 30, 2020, the Microsoft Teams web app will no longer support IE 11.

Beginning August 17, 2021, the remaining Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support IE 11.

This means that after the above dates, customers will have a degraded experience or will be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services on IE 11. For degraded experiences, new Microsoft 365 features will not be available or certain features may cease to work when accessing the app or service via IE 11. While we know this change will be difficult for some customers, we believe that customers will get the most out of Microsoft 365 when using the new Microsoft Edge. We are committed to helping make this transition as smooth as possible.

Customers have been using IE 11 since 2013 when the online environment was much less sophisticated than the landscape today. Since then, open web standards and newer browsers—like the new Microsoft Edge—have enabled better, more innovative online experiences. We believe that Microsoft 365 subscribers, in both consumer and commercial contexts, will be well served with this change through faster and more responsive web access to greater sets of features in everyday toolsets like Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and more.

Respecting investments in IE 11 web apps

We understand the need to “do more with less” in the new business environment. By the dates listed above, customers should no longer access Microsoft 365 apps and services using IE 11, but we want to be clear that IE 11 isn’t going away1 and that our customers’ own legacy IE 11 apps and investments will continue to work. Customers have made business-critical investments in IE 11 legacy apps and we respect that those apps are still functioning.

In this moment of bridging between modern and legacy apps, many customers may feel there is no choice but to rely on a two-browser workaround of using IE 11 alongside a modern browser. However, with the new Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer mode, customers don’t need an awkward workaround of one browser for some apps and another for other apps. They can standardize on one browser and seamlessly experience the best of the modern web in one tab while accessing a business-critical legacy IE 11 app in another tab – all housed within the new Microsoft Edge.

With native integration in Microsoft management, security, and productivity tools, we recommend the new Microsoft Edge to address our customers’ compatibility and secure remote work needs. Microsoft Edge has SmartScreen built-in and has the highest-rated phishing and malware protection as measured by two independent studies. We will also support our customers’ transition to the new Microsoft Edge with app and site compatibility assistance. As part of the App Assure promise, we have Microsoft engineers ready to help customers in case they run into compatibility issues. For more information, see the ‘Help is available’ section below.

Note: Using Internet Explorer mode in the new Microsoft Edge will not help to extend IE 11 access to Microsoft 365 apps and services beyond the dates listed above. Microsoft 365 apps and services will stop supporting IE 11 on the dates listed.

Microsoft Edge Legacy makes way for the new Microsoft Edge

Nearly two years ago, we started working on the new Microsoft Edge, listening to our customers’ needs for world-class compatibility (including legacy app support), security, privacy, easy and unified manageability, and productivity. The result is a whole new Microsoft Edge from the inside out: a browser built on the Chromium open source engine with the latest in Microsoft enterprise capabilities. Since its release in January, millions of users have upgraded their home and work browsers to the new Microsoft Edge. Additionally, new devices and future Windows feature updates (starting with Windows 10, version 20H2) will contain the new Microsoft Edge.

Now that we’ve shipped the new Microsoft Edge, and upgraded most of our Windows 10 customers to the new browser, we’re ending support for the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app on March 9, 2021.

After March 9, 2021, the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app will not receive new security updates.

The new Microsoft Edge is our best expression of a modern browser—we’re excited for customers to experience it. Apps and sites created for Microsoft Edge Legacy will continue to work in the new Microsoft Edge, but if a compatibility issue does arise, we have our App Assure promise to provide support. For more information, see the section below.

For customers using IE 11 to access Microsoft 365 apps and services, or using Microsoft Edge Legacy as their preferred browser, we recommend the new Microsoft Edge and offer a range of support options to help transition.

I would suggest you to try restarting Microsoft Edge Browser and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps:

Open task manager right click on Microsoft Edge and go to details click on microsoftedgeCP.exe and click end task

Restart your Computer and check if it helps.
