Windows 10: Microsoft Hell-Bent on resurrecting Cortana on me, even though I've..?

About three times now I have forced deleted Cortana.
It seems like with updates, sometimes Cortana is resurrected from the dead and brought back to life like a zombie from a horror movie. Its like dead for a few weeks, then, boom, back to life and there again in my tasks list, stalking me... : (
Is Microsoft that intent on spying on us?

I don't suppose there is a permanent way of getting rid of Cortana by disabling it being updated or something?

I'm sorry to hear about that! Syncing has been pretty close to perfect for me, but I don't use the birthday option to sync birth dates - I stopped that a long time ago because they kept getting duplicated....eventually I just created recurring appointments
(as all day events) for all my birthdays and I haven't had any problems ever since. I use recurring appointments a lot (probably 80% of my appointments are recurring), so I don't really know why you had such an issue with those.

In regards to the DST issue you describe, I wonder if your windows live settings are set to the same region/time as your phone? I don't know how open you are to troubleshooting these issue or if you've just written off syncing to windows live as a hopeless
cause...let me know if you'd like to proceed with troubleshooting the problem and I'll try to help you out.

All folders on desktop had their contents moved to cab files

Thanks again... I think i’m just going to have to forget about this to avoid frustration... along with:

- why does windows update fail more often than it works

- why is it so hard to get the task bar to consistently auto-hide, after all its been around sine last century.

- why does microsoft insist on indexing drives for faster searching, despite the massive performance hit, when most people know where to look.

- why did they even bother with cortana.

- why are they hell bent on forcing me to connect to the internet...

I haven't checked your link, but this is what I did on my computer:

Disable Cortana
a) Search for, and open: gpedit.msc
b) Go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Search
c) Disable Allow Cortana

 

Just a heads up, the group policy editor is only available in Pro. There is no gpedit.msc in the Home Edition.

I run the Education version, no Cortana by default. Only the original search function. *Smile

 

Are you using a preview version? If so, then every time a new build is released, windows essentially resets many functions back to baseline. After all, your job of*being an insider is to test these functions,*so it's understandable they would re-enable them.

 

This happens during Cumulative Updates on RTM versions (Except for the last one). I've seen it replace Brinks registry patches to alter the drive listing of file explorer, I've seen it replace Cortana etc. It depends on what MS is updating.

 

I don't take the time to mess with Cortana, just right-click the item on the Taskbar and change it to the icon only, takes up a lot less room on the Taskbar. I can still click that icon to do a Search.
