Microsoft hits the brake on Windows 10’s latest update after new issues

Microsoft has now unceremoniously killed off Windows 10’s optional cumulative update (KB5001649) after various users reported problems when applying the patch. KB5001649 is an out-of-band patch designed to address the remaining printing problems in Windows 10 version 20H2/2004.

KB5001649 (Build 19042.870) for version 2004/20H2 was released to replace the last hotfix KB5001567, and enable mitigation for two problems – blue screens when printing and unexpected results when printing.

However, many users told us that the installation of the second emergency update ends abruptly. In our tests, we also noticed that Windows 10 update designed to fix printing issues fails with a mysterious error message when we click on the “Download and install” button, as shown in the below screenshot.

It’s worth noting that traditional methods to repair Windows Update fails and the ‘Windows Update troubleshooter’ option in the Settings app doesn’t work either.

The Windows 10 printer fix update has been pulled?

According to tests performed by us on multiple devices and different configurations of virtual machines, it appears that Microsoft has now pulled the update (Build 19042.870), and replaced it with the last hotfix KB5001567 (19042.868), which so far seems to be working as intended.

Build 19042.870 is not offered on a device with Build 19042.868

Several users have also confirmed that the patch is no longer being offered via Windows Update, but you can still download it from Microsoft Update Catalog.

At the same time, it’s possible that Microsoft is using machine learning to throttle the rollout of the patch, which means only some users are seeing it.

Microsoft has already confirmed that it uses AI/ML to improve the quality and reliability of an update roll-out. If failures/installation issues are detected by their systems, Windows 10 updates or drivers updates are pulled from the Windows Update database.

It’s unclear when the update will be republished. However, if you really need this patch for your device, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website, enter the KB number (KB5001649) in the search box, and then click on the download button.

Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged the latest issues yet.

  2. New install Windows 10 (issue solved)

It's good that you're not experiencing any issues. Unfortunately many folks are, a quick Google search will show the same info im offering the OP.

    Heres a couple examples:

    Here

    Here

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

  3. Microsoft Decreasing Windows 10 Updates Downtime in Fall Creators Update

If you're a standard Windows user, you probably find Windows updates something of a pain - especially when they force you to reboot your PC after they're installed. But imagine you own a business that constantly has its machines up and running, but also requires the latest security upgrades; each minute of downtime for installing such updates is lost revenue. Because of that issue, which companies brought to Microsoft's attention over the years, the company is streamlining its update process, decreasing the amount of update steps that need to be taken offline (which means less time waiting for the machines to become available to use following an update.)

Usually, in updating your Windows system, there are two phases: an "online" phase, in which your PC automatically checks for new updates and actively downloads required system files while allowing you to keep using the computer for various tasks. The second "offline" phase is where the bulk of the work occurs during the update process, and doesn't allow the user to make use of the machine while this process is taking place (read reboot update sequences, for instance.) With Microsoft's latest streamlining process, two steps that previously took place during the "offline" phase will migrate to the online phase. Namely, 1) user content (apps/settings/configurations) back-up and the laying down of new OS files (Windows Image [WIM] process.)

Microsoft's Jason Howard, in a blog post for the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, said that "By moving the old offline portions of the upgrade process to the online phase, upgrades will appear to take longer if you're watching or timing the progress. We didn't want to sacrifice usability for offline time so the upgrade processes are run at a lower priority to provide for best performance."

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

Defer feature updates in Windows 10

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.
