Windows 10: Microsoft is fixing a bug that deletes your passwords in Windows 10

In November, Microsoft acknowledged a bug that caused Windows 10 to fail to remember passwords in Chrome, Edge, OneDrive and other apps. The problem appears to happen randomly and to different applications, which makes bug tracking more difficult.

The frustrating Windows 10 bug basically prevents software from remembering account credentials. In other words, affected user has to re-enter their username and password after casually using their PC.

“After upgrading to Windows 10 version 2004, Windows is no longer remembering my credentials/passwords in apps across the system (including the browser) and continually prompting me to sign in again,” one user noted in the Feedback Hub.

The reports of the problem first surfaced in April and it’s finally getting fixed in the next cumulative update, which is expected to arrive in February or March.

Users revealed that passwords are forgotten for apps like OneDrive, Outlook, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft account, Google account, Chrome, Adobe CC, etc.

According to Google researcher Tavis Ormandy, Task Scheduler will sometimes clobber your saved credentials in LSASS, which is used for DPAPI User Encryption Key. As a result, passwords/credentials are randomly ignored and users are asked to enter their credentials again.

Microsoft has discovered a permanent solution for a frustrating bug that prevents apps from storing account credentials, and the fix is currently rolling out to testers in the Windows Insider program.

“This issue in Windows affects only a comparatively small number of users with S4U task and it’s now fixed in the latest Windows 10 insider channel,” wrote Eric Lawrence, Microsoft Edge Program Manager.

The flaw, which is also said to be deleting cookies in web browsers, will be fixed for the general public in the next optional update before heading to all machines in the Patch Tuesday release.

Microsoft Fixes Bug in Windows Live File-sharing Service

Microsoft confirmed it has fixed a bug in its online file storage and sharing service Windows Live FolderShare after users reported problems that the service was deleting files without user authorization. Microsoft sent an e-mail to users Friday alerting them that it has fixed a bug that may have "accidentally moved" user files from their original folders into the FolderShare Trash folder, and that users should not delete files in Trash until they ensure they were meant to be deleted. It also advised users how to retrieve deleted files from the Trash folder. A copy of the information sent to users has been posted on the FolderShare Web site.

Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

• Launch the Store from your Start menu.
• Click the user icon next to the search box.
• Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
• Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
• When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”

Microsoft Selects Dolby Audio for Windows 10

it would've been great if microsoft added HEVC decoders, LAV filters along with other codecs with Windows 10, and developing WMP to be better than VLC, KMPlayer and such sorts of media players.

Nevertheless, this is good step for microsoft, by far.
