Microsoft is fixing Windows 10 File Explorer’s long standing bug

The next Patch Tuesday update for Windows 10 looks set to finally fix Microsoft’s bug-prone File Explorer search experience.

Back in 2019, Microsoft shipped Windows 10 November 2019 Update (version 1909) with quality fixes and other improvements, including a smoother and faster search experience in File Explorer.

Windows 10’s November Update added dedicated files preview UI to File Explorer’s search box to display web-powered suggestions and an attractive preview of files stored in local storage and OneDrive.

Those search results show up in a dropdown menu as you type and your search results are saved. However, Microsoft broke the search bar for some users, and also disabled right-click feature, preventing users from quickly deleting the search history.

Some users also complained about File Explorer search box reliability issues, including a problem where the search bar becomes unresponsive after doing multiple searches.

With Windows 10 KB4559004 for version 1909/1903, Microsoft has finally resolved common reliability issues with File Explorer search box.

In addition, there’s a new close button to remove the search item and Microsoft has also restored complete support for right-click – a common complaint among users.

Microsoft is planning to bring these improvements to Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update) with next optional update or August Patch Tuesday release.

The next cumulative update for Windows 10 is also expected to come with these File Explorer fixes:

    • Fix for an issue that causes File Explorer to stop working when users browse directories of raw images and similar file types.
    • Fix for an issue that causes UWP apps to close when File Explorer (explorer.exe) restarts unexpectedly.
    • Fix for an issue where File Explorer’s preview of .msg files doesn’t work when Outlook desktop app is installed.

A new optional update for Windows 10 version 2004 is expected to begin rolling out later this week. As usual, improvements or fixes included in the optional update will be shipped to everyone with the next Patch Tuesday release, which is scheduled to arrive on August 11.

Microsoft Internet Explorer renamed to Windows Internet Explorer ?

Since version 7 of the world`s most popular web browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer was silently renamed to Windows Internet Explorer.Such a step from Microsoft is not a surprise since Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operation system for a long time.Obviously Microsoft corp. wants to state that Internet Explorer is already considered as a part of Windows and not as an external browser (remember the IE and WMP law issues last year!?).

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Microsoft Fixes Bug in Windows Live File-sharing Service

Microsoft confirmed it has fixed a bug in its online file storage and sharing service Windows Live FolderShare after users reported problems that the service was deleting files without user authorization. Microsoft sent an e-mail to users Friday alerting them that it has fixed a bug that may have "accidentally moved" user files from their original folders into the FolderShare Trash folder, and that users should not delete files in Trash until they ensure they were meant to be deleted. It also advised users how to retrieve deleted files from the Trash folder. A copy of the information sent to users has been posted on the FolderShare Web site.
