Another week, another Windows 10 preview release. Microsoft has delivered to testers on its Windows Insider programme a new update that prepares the way for features that will debut in the future Redstone release, but with few changes that will be noticeable to users.

Microsoft is at the beginning of a new development cycle that is building up to the release of the second major update to the Windows 10 platform, codenamed Redstone and due by summer 2016.
This follows on from last year's Windows 10 November Update and the original release last July.

The latest Windows 10 preview for PCs, Build 14257, has been released to testers on the Fast Ring of Microsoft's Windows Insider programme as part of this development cycle. As well as unspecified changes to support features coming in later builds, the latest release comprises a number of fixes, but testers will see few visible changes, according to Microsoft.

"Teams are still early in their new feature work and changes in this build are mostly about laying the foundation for those features to start coming into builds. So you won't see many visible changes quite yet," said Gabe Aul, corporate vice president for Microsoft's Engineering Systems Team, on the Windows Experience blog.

"Also, the increased pace of the Fast Ring (You'll note that this build is only six revs newer than the last build we sent to the Fast Ring) means that there will be fewer big changes between builds as opposed to this time last year when builds were about 30 days apart. There is a ton of coding work going on, but I want to set your expectations on how it will show up for you at our increased Fast Ring pace," he added.

While this build includes bug fixes, Aul disclosed that it has a major issue with the reset function that is intended to restore a PC to its factory state. Using this under Build 14257 will leave the PC in an unusable state, he warned, and the operating system will then have to be reinstalled from scratch. This is set to be fixed in a future update.

Bugs that have been addressed include periodic app crashes or other memory-related app errors that Windows Insiders were experiencing due to a memory management change. Microsoft also fixed an issue where the positions of desktop icons were being jumbled up after switching DPI settings for the display.

Microsoft pushed out the last Windows 10 preview for PCs, Build 14251, last week. Earlier this week, it released the latest preview of the Windows 10 Mobile platform to testers on the Fast Ring.

  2. What is next for Windows 10?

Its like pulling teeth. There are 2 released versions 10240, and the November update. Insiders have substantially more things added and the current insider build is 14257. 14257 is one of the first builds in "redstone" which will be released to the
retail market some time in the 3rd quarter of 2016.

And this keeps giving me the feeling about us, users, beig converted in eternal beta testers. All is ending on patches, build updates, cumulative whatevers and what nots.

You really should not copy the entire article, as that is not fair use. You should copy a small excerpt and link to the full story.

Don't like it, then don't be in the insider program. The insider program is designed to give us access to unstable code, that's the whole point.

I can't understand why someone would join a preview program and then complain that the code isn't finished.

Even if you're not on the insider program, the OS seems to be not finished. Can you count how many updates we had since july? Is not only about Windows 10, is in almost every type of software.

Would you rather wait, to have bugs fixed, and security holes fixed? Not me, I want the patches as soon as they're ready!

Microsoft lays more foundations for Redstone Windows 10 Build 14257

    Hi there.

Actually considering the number of computers W1has been installed on - and the variety - from ancient machines that could barely run XP to modern i7 mega fast gaming platforms the reception has been from the vast majrity of users relatively positive - and certainly its stable enough for typical users too.

Some of those technical journalists have to write something -- otherwise what's the point of their jobs (well what's the point of their job anyway since a lot of them write uninformed rubbish anyway).

Most of the people I know have very little if any problem with W10 and are quite happy with it. I think most of the mega complainers are those who wouldn't like ANYTHING Ms does - even if they added 50,000 USD to your Bank account Every day for FREE !!!.

W10 was released as a "Work in progress" - but on the whole the updates don't bother the vast majority. I remember I was ALWAYS annoyed by W7 which seemed for ever to issue messages at Logon --Configuring for updates - often needing two or 3 reboots before you could start using it. People hve incredibly short memories.

    Cheers
    jimbo

  14. I agree with you fully on this.
Some Posters all they do is have a go at Microsoft all the time, and I think post just for the sake of it,
If they think 10 is no good then they probably never had to use windows 95, 98 or any of the earlier ones.
I remember when 7 first came out how much trouble that gave, look how long it has taken to put that right and still doing so.
