  2. Apps licensed installations on various devices

Thank you for the answer Andre and your clarification regarding terminology, but you are making a reference to Windows 8.1. My enquiry was directed at the upcoming Windows 10 release, and the new rules which apply to the Store.

  3. Apps licensed installations on various devices

Remember, device limit is different from app roaming. Windows 8.1, Microsoft allows a single account to install on up to 81 devices using the same Microsoft Account:

In response to that feedback, and
as we announced at the Build conference in June
, we’re increasing the app roaming limit to remove friction from the app installation process. Starting on October 9, Windows Store apps can be installed on up to 81 devices
associated with a single Microsoft account. This will apply to all apps in the Store, for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

  4. Microsoft lowers app installs from 81 to 10 devices with Windows 10

I noticed that little tidbit yesterday when I was browsing the Store and thought maybe it was a typo. This tactic is also a slick way to generate more revenue to offset the cost of offering free upgrades from 7/8.1 to Win 10.

  5. Won't impact me. I only have 4 PC's. No phones or tablets. I'd be hard pressed to exceed 10 installs let alone 81. The only impact I can see is a company using one account across all devices?

  7. I already have 3 of them Cliff S, One is a tester account used for initial preview testing of Win 8 & currently Windows 10 Insider Previews and also a Junkyard for new Apps in the store I have tested but never wish to re-install.

The other 2 are dedicated to my everyday use 8.1 (soon to be 10) systems.

It is also good that I can also switch to each of the 3 accounts on the same machine and install Apps from each account to get all desired store Apps on the same machine.

Microsoft lowers app installs from 81 to 10 devices with Windows 10

If I am understand this. It is 10 devices per local or Microsoft account. So, if there are more that one user wouldn't each have up to 10 devices?

I think this needs to be worded differently. I can see this as being misunderstood. Here is how it could look-Your limited to installing 10 apps or program per Microsoft Account. I would go over that with just 3rd party programs. If I was an app developer I wouldn't be to happy about this change, it could mean less money because someone couldn't buy an app or install it if they have 10 apps installed free or paid. What does Microsoft consider an app browsers, 3rd party programs, or just their stuff?

I suppose you mean Apps and not devices. I think it would be 10 per account as long as your accounts are not on the same device.

    @Gary

So, you think it is 10 apps or 10 programs on the same computer even if there are multiple accounts that use a different Microsoft accounts?

So, am I going to be able to install all my 3rd party programs or upgrade them when needed if I stay with 10? I have at least 21 programs (haven't counted them all) Installed? What if a new programs comes along or I purchase it will I be able to install it on windows 10?

I believe that they are referring to MS aps from their store and not real programs. But if you were to have say three MS accounts on one PC . I would think that MS would know that they all are on the same IP address.. But if you have 3 separate devices all on the same account, I would think it would be 10 per device.

Microsoft lowers app installs from 81 to 10 devices with Windows 10

I read it to mean you can only install a particular app on 10 different devices. Not limiting you to installing only 10 apps.

From my understanding you can install as many apps or programs as you like per device. The number of apps you have has no impact on the number of programs you can have or update later on.

  15. I always wondered if the initial wording was poorly worded ... either that or MS was being cheeky.

81 devices? That's an odd number, perhaps MS meant devices running Windows 8.1 and now that Windows 10 is soon to be available, the wording has changed to devices running Windows 10, but is being interpreted as 10 devices.

I don't have any information other than what we've all read. It just seems to be more than coincidence that the number of devices matches the release number ... ok 81 doesn't = 8.1 *Tongue
