  1. Microsoft Money not working in build 10240

I guess you like what your used to. I tried Money a while back, but didn't like it and went to Quicken. Since Money is no longer supported (and if you want to stay with Win10), you may want to bite the bullet and switch to Quicken while you still have access to your Money data. Who knows if Money will still work after a few more Win10 updates. Quicken has a conversion process that will convert Money files to the Quicken file format.

You have a point in that even if it begins to work, it may again fail with the continuous Windows Updates. But it has continued to work in Win7 even though that Sunset version was published in 2010 or 2011. Also, others have indicated that it worked fine in Win8.1 since it's release. So I guess there is hope that MS might offer a lasting fix. But who knows.

As for Quicken, I tried it for a while back in 2012. Something happened and it stopped importing my data files and no solution was offered from Quicken even though I had a paid version. So at that point, I went right back to MS Money (the free Sunset version).

I find it amazing that there is seemingly so few (good) choices available for those of us who want to manage our checkbooks on our PCs versus the old fashioned method. I get the impression that many people have never thought (or perhaps have never been aware of checkbook programs). As a result, they just go online and compare the banks transactions with their manual pen written register. Personally, I hate that method after using MS Money for so many years.

If MS does not offer a solution soon, I will try Quicken again. However, I am not going to buy it until they come out with Quicken 2016 (which will probably not be until September or the first of October given their past history). I say this for several reasons. First, I don't want this years edition only to get the nag screen a month later! Second, it appears Quicken is not even totally committing themselves to saying that Quicken 2015 is compatible with Win10. They indicate it 'probably' will work without problems--(per their web site).

In the meantime, I am still hoping MS might offer some fix. We all have our own opinions, but for me, MS Money has been the best, hassle free option. Right now, I am continuing to use MS Money on my secondary computer that runs Win7 in a virtual machine. But I am prepared to give Quicken another try if necessary after their 2016 version is released.

I've noticed that some of the software us 'traditionalists' rely upon is falling by the wayside since so many folks are using their smartphones to do things like the Internet, E-Mail, banking, etc. I don't do the online banking part, can get to my bank in 4 miles and light traffic outside of tourist season.

Outside of a checkbook program, I do use my credit union's online bill pay to save on postage and mail time. And some bills, I pay directly on the respective web sites of the payer.

But aside from that, I have gotten so used to having my own checkbook ledger in a computer program spreadsheet (mostly with MS Money over many years), I will never go back to a pen and paper check register to log bill pay or other transactions in my checking account. And even after MS retired Money Plus in 2009 (and some of its enhanced features), the option to download data files (for monthly deposits and expenses) from my credit union's web site has remained ever since. For me, MS Money was/is dead simple to use and very convenient.

Back in 2009, MS claimed they were retiring the program because of 'changing market needs'. I was surprised they did that because I feel there will always be a need for some type of computer generated checkbook programs. And Quicken must think there is a market for this type of software as they have continued to offer their version through the years. My theory was/is that MS never appropriately marketed MS Money and they felt it was wise to just stayed focused on their cash cows like MS Office.......so they kicked MS Money to the curb. However, the Microsoft Money Plus (Sunset version) was always an alternative and free!

  5. I had exactly the same problem importing a qif file. Couldn't get the program to start with the 'Import Complete' dialogue. However I followed the instructions at:
Windows 8 (64-bit version) compatibility with Sunset Money | Ameridans Microsoft Money Offline Weblog

and once I had put the new .dll file version in place, the program started normally and completed the import. Hopefully this will be the end of these problems, no doubt I will find out next time I come to do my complete accounts next month!

I made the registry changes and I applied the recommended patch. If you import transactions, Money will still shut down. BUT you can go on line to your bank, print out your docs, be sure to delete the docs and any trans on your computer. Run the patch and manually update money. It's a pain but you can reconcile your check registries until microsoft comes up with an update to fix. I'm a cheapskate and not ready to throw in the towel yet. One more thing, if money doesn't "like" something about a trans it will shut down and you may have to reword the payee name so it will accept the transaction.

I just left a message with Microsoft Support - they called me back within one minute - and got through to a very helpful lady who very efficiently linked to my computer and sorted it out for me. Ten minutes later Money is working perfectly. *Smile

She altered the registry somehow. I've no idea but it didn't cost anything and it worked so I was happy just to watch.

Why not just get Microsoft to fix it as I did? It didn't cost anything.

If you reached someone in a reasonable amount of time, then I am shocked! MS is known for long hold times. Also, some of their phone reps are not the smartest in the world. And the representatives that the public gets to speak to are generally not the higher level tier tech support that a computer shop might have access to.

At any rate, it sounds like you were very pleased. Have you attempted to download transactions off your bank's web site? I understand this is where a lot of people are having problems. For a number of people who have done the registry hack themselves, MS Money appears to initially work. Then they get surprised in subsequent uses of the software.

  14. I am disappointed to hear that many of you are not getting Money to work or that it is crashing after getting it to 'appear' to work. I have done the fix in the registry, to both entries, and it has functioned so far. Admittedly I am using Money in its simplest most basic way; just as a tract of how my money is being spent. I do not download or try to input any bank files 'into' it. When doing a checking account balance with the bank statement I do it 'manually'. I have made new 'payee' and it worked fine. I have changed 'amounts' in some of the 'automatic' entries and it still functioned. Either I am being very lucky or I do not do anything very 'in-depth' or intricate as some of you others?

One of the respondents said that Microsoft is aware and will be making some adjustments/changes so that Money will function? I hope that is so and I do look forward to that. I wonder if they will make any time of mentioned about it? How might we know if we need to get a special download?

    thanks for listening

  15. I went back to Windows 8.1 PRO and everything was fine for a while... then Microsoft Money started behaving strangely telling me I do not have enough memory to start it up and things got worse. My Windows 8.1 Pro started to degrade rapidly doing things like losing the desktop and I had not made any changes in the registry. I decided I had enough and formatted my drive C: to do a clean install of Windows 10. After two days of installing and updating, my system seems stable. I did the registry hack for MS Money Sunset and then restored it from a backup. It seems to be working fine so far. *Party
