Windows 10: Microsoft MVPs Hack For The Greater Good

Just as many hands make light work, many coders solve big problems. This is something the Global Hack for Good undoubtedly proved when hundreds of participants across the world came together to solve real-world problems through the power of hacking.

The initiative was driven by three Microsoft MVPs, Ee Lane Yu, James Novak and Eric SauvÃ©, who wanted to combine cumulative brain and computing powers on the same day for a good cause.

Ee Lane, who is from Australia and acted as the main point of contact for the September event, says it took about a year to get everything up and ready. The event called on Microsoft Powerapp-ers to come together simultaneously and work on a shared issue - certainly no mean feat when timezones and personal lives are in the mix.

Organizers as well as participants were ultimately being asked to sacrifice after work and weekend hours, away from family and friends, to hack for social good and raise money for three select charity organizations.

Nonetheless, the community endeavoured to make it happen. Streamed live from 10 nations, participating teams were given four-and-a-half hours to build the best possible solution they could focused on education.

There were no egos nor âcompetitorâ mindsets, with everyone involved passionate about providing a solution for good! Of course, food, drinks and music helped to make the atmosphere all the more enjoyable.

The event resembled a global party rather than a global hack - Japan had a room full of balloons and disco lights, Australia had food and drink flowing from the get-go, and Scotland had a âscranâ table with all Scottish food delights.

âI will never forget the feeling of that day,â Ee Lane says. âIt felt so surreal and I got goosebumps just watching all the teams around the world hacking together.â

Better yet - this energy transferred over to social media as international teams happily shared their experiences and learnings.

The result? Several schools from different parts of the world have made use of the various solutions in some shape or form â this, Ee Lane says, makes it all worth it as the event made a tangible impact!

âWe have all learnt and grown so much organising this event. Every single person who participated and observed contributed to the success of the event.â

Events like this just go to show that, as a Microsoft community, there is no problem too big that cannot be faced together.

Continuing the evolution of the Microsoft MVP Award

Back in October 2015, I announced the first step in a broad vision to transform the MVP Award program. Since then, you have provided a great deal of feedback on how we could take this vision further. Thank you for your feedback. Now, with the arrival of 2017, this is the perfect moment to share with you the next step in the evolution of the MVP Award program.

For most of the program's existence, the MVP review model has been based on four award cycles per year. This never truly provided us with the agility to quickly recognize community leaders and technical experts as Microsoft MVPs. In addition, we ended up having four sub-groups. We hear all the time "I am a January MVP", or "I am an April MVP". That's not our goal - we want a unified program, providing a consistent experience. To that end, we heard your feedback and that is all about to change.

Beginning today, we are going to recognize new MVPs every single month. We want great people to join the program as fast as possible! At the same time, to simplify our re-award process, we are going annual. Just one re-award cycle per year. Every July 1st all renewals will happen with one unified celebration when we recognize all our renewing MVPs.

We know that by nature MVPs love to learn new technologies and skills, often ahead of others. You then process that information and you share. This is how you truly help the community. As part of our commitment to continuously improve, we are also adding new benefits to the program focused on enabling new learning opportunities for you.

We have recorded a special announcement video below which provides greater detail about these updates and I invite you to watch it. If you are an MVP I hope you are as excited as we are about these improvements. The team will be taking questions you might have on the MVP Yammer Network. If you aspire to become an MVP, I encourage you to check out what the MVP Award is and nominate yourself or someone that you believe deserves this recognition.

Without your partnership, the MVP Award would not be the pillar that it is today in the technical industry. Announcing MVP Reconnect for former Microsoft MVPs

The MVP Reconnect story

Right after we announced the next generation of the Microsoft MVP Award about a year ago, the MVP Award Team made a commitment to keep up the constant evolution of the program. In this new "mobile-first, cloud-first" world, it is imperative to be more agile and to make sure we are providing the best experience to our customers and partners.

So, we asked ourselves: "What's next?" We started to gather feedback from MVPs and other community leaders and received comments such as:
"Several former MVPs grew in their careers and today, they are CTOs and decision makers. I have a lot of respect for these peers and I listen when they talk. Their experience is king and I would love to see them get involved with the community again!"

"I am missing the MVP networking and the people.... That energy is unique."

In fact, we have heard from many MVPs over the years who were looking for a way to stay in touch with the program and their peers after their award periods ended.

So, we created a working group - made up of Microsoft employees and current and former MVPs. Just like any other community, we brainstormed, discussed, drafted ideas together, and prioritized features. After a few months, MVP Reconnect was born! This is a new venture designed to keep you connected with Microsoft and with the professional communities you follow.

The idea behind the program can be best described with an analogy from another industry: The Oscars are one of the most well recognized and prestigious awards in the film industry. From the moment someone wins their first Oscar, they become part of a very special community - that of Academy Award Winners - and they belong to this community forever, even if they don't win an award every year.

There is a very similar concept in our MVP community that we are helping to formalize: once an MVP, always part of the MVP community!

We understand the kind of commitment, time, and passion required to be an MVP. We also understand that life and priorities change and that, sometimes, you need to take a break to focus on other responsibilities, professional or personal. We believe that even though some community leaders are not always re-awarded, they still deserve recognition for being a valuable part of the Microsoft ecosystem!

We are very happy to announce MVP Reconnect! The program is available for all former MVPs to join.

Who can join?

The program is open to all former MVPs, regardless of technical expertise or award category, with a minimum of 1 full MVP Award year. Members must be in good standing, meaning that they must have no Code of Conduct or NDA violations.

We believe that having a diverse population will increase the impact of networking and create unique opportunities that were not possible in the past!

Put simply, if you are a former MVP, we'd love for you to join!

Why should I join?

MVP Reconnect will be the official channel for you to stay connected to other community leaders and Microsoft. You will have the opportunity to participate in an exclusive networking channel, events, and private discussions, as well as local and global offerings.

If your contributions to the technical community slow down temporarily, staying connected means that you maintain a good position for future recognition as an active MVP. If you have a long history with the MVP program, you'll be able to share your experiences and coach others to take full advantage of all the opportunities that the MVP Award can provide.

This is not a program from Microsoft to the community; this is a program where Microsoft and the community contribute together to have a bigger impact! For this reason, we have decided to have a joint management approach and we are establishing an advisory board. Five to ten members will be part of this board and they will have the responsibility to represent the community and lead the constant evolution of the MVP Reconnect program. They will partner with Microsoft to define new features of the program, consolidate feedback, and evaluate cool new ideas for members. We will have periodic elections to select new board members. As part of a true community, you, through your advisory board representation, will be able to participate in driving new ideas, shaping the community structure, and building this program for the future.

After you are approved in the program, we will send you a small thank you gift to show our appreciation.

How do I join?

The program is open to all former MVPs. You can join the program by filling out the membership request form here. We will follow up soon after with an official registration email. Supplying your MVP ID and the primary email you used during your tenure will help expedite the validation process.
