Microsoft Photos app not opening .MP4 files / allowing to trim. Error: "Something went wrong."

For the past couple months I've been using the Microsoft Photos app to trim gameplay videos I have recorded to share with some friends in servers but recently whenever I've tried to use the photos app for trimming my clips Which are all .mp4 files, I get an error:[File name].mp4Something went wrongThe thing is, this has worked previously with .mp4 files, and I can't see why it hasn't worked now.I've tried various things, from reinstalling the app, repairing it, rebooting my machine afterwards, resetting the app, as well as resetting the Microsoft Windows store.I've also looked at other commu

Problem opening photos and videos with Photos App

Want to use Photo Apps to trim videos. When I go to the .mp4 video file; right click; and select Open With .... Photos; the file won't open . I get a System Error -2147163901. Same result when I try to open a .jpg.

When I double click on the .jpg file it opens up in MicroSoft Office Picture Manager. When I double click the .mp4 file, I get the same error message as above.

  3. Trying to split MP4 in Photos app - trim is grayed out

I'm trying to split an MP4 in the Photos app - but trim is simply is grayed out.

I can play the MP4, but nothing else.

In fact all the edit+create options are grayed out. I could have sworn "draw" was available, but now that I look again, it's not.

Editing an existing Project MP4 File to reduce the content and change the name of the Project

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

Follow these steps and check if that helps:

    • Right click the file and select ‘open with’ to click on Photo app. This will open the file in the Photo app.
    • Now that you have opened the video file with the Photos app, click Edit & Create, and then click Trim option.
    • Finally, click ‘Save a copy’ option to create a new video file by omitting the trimmed portion of the video. The new video file can be found at the location of the original video.
Suggest you to refer this article to edit a photo and check if that makes any difference.
