Ransomware Patch

Two different cases:

• Windows Vista and Windows XP: They have been released a separate patch for the latest attack. No prerequisites.
• Windows 7, 8.1, 10: The updates of these OSes are cumulative. The newer patch contains all the previous patches as well. Earlier 7, 8.1 did not follow this, but now they are. For example Build 14393.953 includes patching for MS01070(or whatever) and the
  later builds like 14393.1028 also contains the previous fixes.

Epson Stylus Photo 1270 has stopped printing

The updates released on Patch Tuesday for Windows 10 have some problems with Epson dot matrix printers.Microsoft has recently released an update for Windows 7 and 8.1, unfortunately not for Windows 10. (Thanks tohttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4055038/november-21-2017-kb4055038

I suggest waiting a day or two so that the patch becomes available.

At this point in the release people who want to upgrade have. I know for my family, extended family, friends, coworkers, frenemies, and clients that the only people going to Windows 10 now are people who are buying new machines. To be honest, most of them waited until their current hardware was dying to do so. All debated on Macs simply because they didn't want the hassle of learning Windows 10, convinced Microsoft will once again dork with its interface/features somewhere in the future/near future, and they don't want to have to deal with it. In all their words, "I just want to turn on my computer, see the same stuff I always see, and get my work done."

 

Resistance is futile you will be assimilated. *Banghead A bad move IMHO.

 

I agree with MrBill. Despite what MS thinks people do not like change. Personally I am only using Windows 10 because mine was a new PC (after my old one had a hard drive fault) and it came with it. Or else I would of stayed on Windows 7 for as long as possible. I must admit I don't like Windows 10 much even after 6 months. Too many glitches and little irritations. I think the masses prefer a mature OS with fewer bugs and unexpected behaviour. Of course there will be a storm over this. I'm not sure who MS think they are by trying to force their new OS onto people who don't want it. People paid for Windows 7 or 8, they should be allowed to keep it regardless of whether Windows 10 is a freebie.

 

If there was a true alternative to running Windows, they wouldn't be doing this. Most have so much invested in Windows, office , and windows compatible programs etc, that they can't easily switch to an alternative. The average joe isn't going to get far running Linux, IMHO. I have nothing against Linux, I run it on my Raspberry Pi. I just don't see to many that would jump ship to it. Want to go Apple, get your wallet open and be prepared to pay big $$. People will bitch and complain, and rightly so, but they will just keep on using Windows. IMHO, very few will go anywhere else. And Microsoft knows that.

 

I've heard people talk about making the switch to the Mac and I have to wonder how many have really evaluated the Mac OS? In my experience it seems the "ease of use" is the result of hiding more of the OS from the user. Technical operations are still complex, but it's harder to drill down and find the necessary settings; users are just as lost on the Mac as they are on Windows. The big difference is they can go to the local Apple store where there are people who actually know what they're doing and get help from them. That's part of what they pay extra for.

 

A lot of what you say is valid and can also apply to Linux. There's a lot of similarity between Mac OS X and Linux, just the more than 200 versions of Linux have various implementations of the GUI. A lot of folks using an OS in specific circumstances haven't much need in drilling down into the inner workings, just want the necessary programs to simply work. Windows does make some things much easier and certainly has more less-expensive programs available.

 

Here is the thing, many of us can't switch.

We have 10 computers all of which use Media Center. We simply won't switch to 10. We have peppered versions of 7/8/8.1, but trying to force people to switch is just wrong. wrong wrong wrong. Tsk they used to be a good company.

At this point, they deserve what ever happens to them, clearly they have no respect for users wishes.

Exactly right. When something doesn't work with OS X, the standing policy for Mac owners is to take it in to a local dealer and pay for it...*Wink With Windows you can in the vast majority of cases fix it yourself if you are so inclined. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. You cannot just run out and buy a copy of OS X and install it on your PC--nope, Apple artificially ties OS X to a Mac (Apple-branded PC) and won't allow anyone to legally install it anywhere but on an x86 Apple PC. So you not only have to obtain OS X, you have to buy a computer from Apple to even run it. Old joke but true: the Mac is the dongle for the Apple OS. Then you are faced with how comparatively scarce good programs are for the Mac--and for games, the Mac is a veritable desert. Another parched Sahara is the 3rd-party component market for Macs, compared to the Windows environment. If you like desktops and like buying internal components to keep up a perpetual upgrade (I do)--you definitely want to steer clear of the Mac. Wouldn't that be ironic...someone buys a Mac to get away from Windows but winds up using Apple's bootcamp to install and run Windows on his Mac, anyway...*Wink Many Mac owners do exactly that.

As to them "knowing" things at the Apple store...most people in the US are not within a quick distance of an Apple store, and besides, what they "know" about at an Apple store is how to sell their customers more of what Apple makes. Which may or may not serve the advantage of the customer, imo.

There is definitely truth to what has been said about MS knowing people will stay with Windows. I am one of those, pretty unimpressed with Windows 10 but will stick with it because I have so many games accrued over the years which simply won't run on OSX. But it still shouldn't be forced down people's throats, if someone wants to stay on Windows 7 they should be left alone to do so.

It's a tough one really, Windows and OS X (plus it's iOS spin offs) both have their problems. Apple's mantra of 'it just works' is baloney - I see enough bugs. I would never switch to Linux as I have no clue what it is apart from another operating system. I don't suppose it would do me much good wanting to play games and keep with the simple and familiar. I suppose OS X bugs and problems are less so than Windows. But then it should be, after all Apple has much more control than Microsoft over hardware and software - so in essence I find their bugs less forgiveable.

I guess the resentment boils down to Windows 10 being forced onto people, being buggy, forcing updates and in my case wishing Windows 7 was the last OS and the one they would build upon with patches over time.

I also struggle to see how serious businesses would be in any hurry to move from Windows 7 to 10 - the desktop/tablet hybrid OS theme surely doesn't sit well in these institutions. I guess it's better than 8 and 8.1 which looked pretty ridiculous with that Metro interface (I skipped right over 8 and 8.1)

That sounds bizarre to me.
