Windows 10: Microsoft releases new Intel microcode updates for Windows 10 version 1803

Earlier this year, Intel released microcode updates to their OEM partners for CPUs such as Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake and Skylake-based platforms. Microsoft has finally completed the testing of the microcode updates on Windows 10 and today the company has released the Intel firmware update to all supported devices.

Microsoft today released new Intel microcode updates for devices running Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803). Windows 10 KB4100347 includes microcode updates from Intel for select CPUs.

“Based on these efforts, we have now released production microcode updates to our OEM customers and partners for Kaby Lake- and Coffee Lake-based platforms, plus additional Skylake-based platforms. This represents our 6th, 7th and 8th Generation Intel® Core product lines as well as our latest Intel® Core X-series processor family,” said Navin Shenoy, executive vice president and general manager of the Data Center Group at Intel Corporation.

Microsoft says that the update is available through Windows Update and it would download automatically if you turn on automatic updating in Settings. You can also download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

As noted above, this is a standalone update and it can be downloaded through Microsoft Update Catalog. The Intel microcode update is only available for Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) and Windows Server 2016 Version 1803 (Server Core).

Ever since Intel disclosed the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, Microsoft and Intel together rolled out several updates to mitigate them. Microsoft has already fixed the vulnerabilities, but deploying the most recent patch is still recommended.

Intel microcode update for Windows 10 1803

Intel issued the microcode weeks ago, we are just waiting for Microsoft to make a new Windows microcode patch for 1803. The Intel microcode is specific to each CPU, it has nothing to do with the various Windows versions.

The Patch Tuesday updates are out, along with a Cumulative Update for 1803. The Cumulative Update does not contain microcode to mitigate Spectre-V2.

Also there is no new microcode update for 1803 in the Update Catalog, so Windows 10 1803 machines with no firmware BIOS fix available remain vulnerable to Spectre-V2 whilst we wait for Microsoft to release a microcode update.
