Microsoft releases new updates for Windows 10 version 1703 and 1709

Microsoft is today rolling out Windows 10 KB4134661 and KB4134660 for Creators Update (version 1703) and Fall Creators Update (version 1709), respectively. The updates are only available for older versions of Windows 10 operating system, and both of them are supposed to improve the upgrade transition to the newly-released version 1803.

Microsoft in a support document explains that the updates released today will allow computers running Windows 10 Creators and Fall Creators Update to show a notification of an improved privacy experience on upgrading the systems to Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

“This Windows update provides a notification of an improved privacy experience on upgrade to the Windows 10 April 2018 release,” Microsoft explains in a support post.

Microsoft is rolling the two patches via Windows Update but you can download the offline installers from the Microsoft Update Catalog using the below links.

At the moment, Microsoft is busy with the rollout of Windows 10 April 2018 Update, the latest version of Microsoft’s desktop operating system. Microsoft started rolling out the newest version of Windows 10 on April 30, however, the rollout takes place in stages so the update is not yet available for everyone.

You can install the patches released today to improve the Windows 10 version 1803 upgrade experience. In other words, these patches ensure a smoother upgrade from Creators Update and Fall Creators Update.

It is also worth noting that not all systems are getting the update right now, and there are no known issues or bugs hitting these two updates at the time of writing this story. Microsoft hasn’t provided any more information on the two updates for Windows 10 but we’ll update the article if and when new information is available.

Earlier today, Microsoft also shipped an update to Windows 10 version 1803 with Intel’s latest Microcode firmware. It is also worth noting that Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) still has many bugs on some hardware configuration, and it has received just a single cumulative update since the public release in April. The last cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803 included a limited collection of fixes and improvements.

Fall Feature update 1709 fails and reverts to 1703

    Thanks Dave

I currently have a list of the 50 or so Feature Updates from 1703 still on the Windows Update screen – some marked “Requires a restart to finish installing” and others marked “Failed to install on [date]”

When 1803 appears and is downloaded, what will happen to this 1709 list?
Hopefully Win will not keep on trying to reinstall them again.

(I assume that 1803 can update 1703 directly and not with 1709 as a prerequisite...)

Fall Feature update 1709 fails and reverts to 1703

Win10 v. 1703 repeatedly tries to update to Fall Creators update 1709, get almost to the end (the repeated restarts), displays "attempting to recover installation" and then "Restoring
    your previous version of Windows
" - which is does successfully, and then starts this process all over again.

But there is no indication of what went wrong. The Win log (Control panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Windows logs) in 1703 logs nothing during the latter stages of the update, as if by that time it was already running
    1709 and was logging elsewhere.

Q: Is the update failure reason logged - and if so where please?

    Windows 10 Home 64-bit version 1703 build 15063 1058

System: Intel Core i5-7400 Kaby Lake CPU, 4 Cores

UEFI BIOS: PRIME B250M-A Ver 0612
