Windows 10: Microsoft releases Windows Terminal 1.0

Microsoft revealed in May 2019 that it was working on an open source terminal application for Windows which it called Windows Terminal. The company released the first preview of Windows Terminal in June 2019 and regular updates in the months that followed.

Yesterday, the company announced that Windows Terminal 1.0 is available. The first stable version of the terminal application is available as a download from the Microsoft Store and from the GitHub repository.

The program requires Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher (that is Windows 10 version 1903 or higher); it won't run on earlier versions of Windows 10.

Windows Terminal

Windows Terminal supports multiple command line applications as well as tabs and panes. One of the main advantages of Windows Terminal is that it is possible to use multiple terminal applications from a single window.

Users can load PowerShell, the Command Prompt as well as other terminals including those provided by installed Windows Subsystem for Linux distributions next to each other. Options include displaying these as tabs or in a single tab as panes.

Another strength of Windows Terminal is that it supports customization options. These include changing backgrounds, color schemes, fonts, key bindings and more.

Windows Terminal makes use of GPU acceleration to render text. Microsoft notes that the feature improves the user experience significantly. The program supports Unicode and UTF-8 and features Microsoft's latest font, Cascadia Code. Interested users can check out variants of the font on the official GitHub repository.

Windows Terminal Preview

Microsoft launched a preview channel for Windows Terminal to showcase and test new features. The channel will receive monthly updates from June 2020 on according to Microsoft. Interested users can check out the Windows Terminal Preview page on the Microsoft Store or the GitHub releases page.

Closing Words

Windows Terminal is an open source terminal application for Windows to run one or multiple command line applications. The support for tabs and panes makes it an excellent tool for users, administrators or developers in particular, who use different command line applications regularly.

Windows Terminal is only available for recent versions of the company's Windows 10 operating system and only supplied as a Microsoft Store application.

Windows Terminal Release Candidate v0.11.1333.0 (1.0rc2) to Windows 10

Changes

Some of you reported that text would literally melt, so we added two new rendering options to help congeal your terminal experience (#5853)

You can use the following (global!) settings to control various aspects of our rendering engine:

experimental.rendering.software (boolean): when your graphics drivers won't stay in their lane, you can opt in for software rendering.

experimental.rendering.forceFullPaint (boolean): you can turn off the differential drawing optimization that we added--at the cost of speed, you can have full determinism.

We're now shipping the latest version of Cascadia Code (and Cascadia Mono), 2004.30 (#5867)

Bug Fixes

Terminal Competence

git log (and other paged applications) should now copy with their lines wrapped (#5771) (#5870)

We should no longer leave old search result highlights laying around for you to step on like a small plastic block toy in the dark (#5798)

CSI 2 J (the non-destructive "clear screen") will now correctly push the screen into the scrollback (#5683)

Rendering

Box and line drawing glyphs now appear at the right sizes (and actually connect with each other) (#5743)

This works in almost all fonts, but ones that do not actually have glyphs for that range will still have some unusual visual artifacting.

Hundreds of emoji should now appear to be the correct width (#5795)

A special exception was made for characters in WGL4, the old codepage 437 glyphs everybody knows and loves and also hates. They're still narrow.

Reliability

Dragging a selection while resizing the terminal is not a reasonable thing to do, but it was even less reasonable for us to crash when you did so. We now don't. (#5855)

We'll no longer crash when the clipboard gives us the classic "high five! too slow!" (#5856)

Terminal is now more robust in the face of you trying to close the same tab multiple times (#5742)

Closing a tab in fullscreen mode will no longer cause terminal to stop responding (#5809)

New Windows Terminal Release Candidate v0.11.1251.0 for Windows 10

Changes

This is the first release of Terminal whose name doesn't have "(Preview)" in it!

That doesn't necessarily mean we're done, but it does mean that this is the first release candidate.

Rendering (Performance!)

Terminal no longer renders the entire screen when something changes (#5345) (#5185) (#5092)

This saves 30-40% of the time it took to print out your huge synthetic test files from #1064 and it makes cmatrix run even faster.

RTL text should now be slightly more reliable (possibly readable! not necessarily "working" to any great degree) (thanks @schorrm!) (#5734)

Accessibility

Narrator and NVDA should once again be able to read out search results (#5478)

Input & Interaction

We've reworked how we handle titlebar dragging to not require us to cut a giant hole in the window (thanks @greg904!) (#5485)

Miscellaneous

Terminal now ships with the CRT embedded, so it can be deployed in places where the Store doesn't exist (#5661)

The terminal now has a minimum width (#5599)

If that width is too big for you, I'd love to learn why you want our beautiful child to be so tiny.

You can now click "Third-Party Notices" in our About dialog to see which OSS we're using (#5508)

cls (cmd) and Clear-Host (powershell) will now properly clear Terminal's scrollback (#5627)

This required some ingenuity. These two applications "clear" by printing a bunch of spaces down on top of the screen or "scrolling" the buffer to an absurd location.

The pseudoconsole host now detects these requests, only when they come from CMD or PowerShell, and translates them into the intended modern format of clear.

New tab/min/max/close buttons now have tooltips (thanks @Chips1234!) (#5484)

Bug Fixes

We fixed the bug where terminal wouldn't always scroll down to the bottom (and pretend it hadn't seen any lines below it) (#5630)

Pasting HTML-formatted buffer contents into Outlook Web/Gmail no longer includes a stray "WINDOWS TERMINAL !!!" (#5595)

When you request cleartype antialiasing over translucency, your text will now remain visible (#5277)

This comes at a performance cost. cleartype AA costs more when we have to compose it.

For those of you who like to use Ctrl+Alt as AltGr, that works again (thanks @lhecker!) (#5552)

The emoji picker should be better-aligned with your text (#5609)

VT & Translation

Lines that begin with blocks of color no longer sometimes have their colors stripped (#5550)

Performance

We now spend even less time constructing attribute runs and text render clusters (thanks @skyline75489!) (#5584) (#5644) (#5645)

Reliability

Terminal would, for some people, always crash on exit. An exit is an exit, but a crash is also a crash, and that made our reliability numbers stink. That's fixed. (#5629)

The backing console should no longer crash when you resize it when CMD is running (#5620)

A selection crash has been fixed (#5551)

Some accessibility scenarios involving the alternate buffer no longer cause crashes (#5399)

New Windows Terminal v1.0.1401.0 released for Windows 10

Last year at Build 2019, we first announced the Windows Terminal. Since then, we have been working with the community to create a wonderful terminal experience while still being a preview product.

Here we are at Build 2020 and we are so excited to share with you our latest announcements!

Build 2020

We are incredibly proud to announce the release of Windows Terminal 1.0! Windows Terminal has come a long way since its . You can download Windows Terminal from the Microsoft Store or from the GitHub releases page. Windows Terminal will have monthly updates, starting in July 2020.

If you are someone who likes to be involved with the development of Windows Terminal and use the latest features as soon as they are developed, this is the channel for you! Windows Terminal is full of features that improve your workflow and give you a wide variety of customization options to give you the best experience. Here’s an overview of some of our fan-favorite features.

Tabs and Panes

Windows Terminal allows you to run any command line application inside tabs and panes. You can create profiles for each of your command line applications and open them side-by-side for a seamless workflow. Each of your profiles can be uniquely customized to your liking. Additionally, the terminal will automatically create profiles for you if you have Windows Subsystem for Linux distributions or additional PowerShell versions installed on your machine.

GPU Accelerated Rendering

Windows Terminal utilizes the GPU to render its text. This provides a much faster experience when using the command line. This renderer also provides support for Unicode and UTF-8 characters. This gives you the opportunity to use the terminal in a variety of languages while also displaying all of your favorite emojis. Lastly, we have included our newest font, Cascadia Code, inside the Windows Terminal package. The default font is set to Cascadia Mono, which is the font variant that does not include programming ligatures. For additional variants of the Cascadia Code font, head over to the Cascadia Code GitHub repo.

Customization Options

Windows Terminal is full of settings that provide an unlimited amount of customizations. You can have acrylic backgrounds and background images with unique color schemes and custom fonts for your own personalized experience. You can also add custom key bindings to help you feel more at home. Additionally, each profile is customizable to match the workflow you need, whether it be on Windows, WSL, or even SSH!

Fan-Favorite Community Contributions

Some of the coolest features in Windows Terminal were contributed by community members on GitHub. The first we would like to call out is background image support. Summon528 wrote the functionality for Windows Terminal to support both gifs and images in the background of the text window. This is by far one of our most used features.

Another fan favorite is the retro terminal effect setting. Ironyman added support for glowing text and scan lines within the text buffer, thus providing that feeling of using a classic CRT machine. The team never anticipated this feature coming through on GitHub, but it was so good that we just had to include it inside the terminal.

All emoji are now sized as recommended by Unicode 13.0. You will see some emoji that are smaller than you want them to be. That's just a fact of life. (#5934)

Existing user documentation in this repository will be moving to a nice farm upstate in short order.

It will not escape your notice that there are two packages in this release:

WindowsTerminal is the stable build of Terminal.

WindowsTerminalPreview is the preview version, which can be installed side-by-side with the stable version.
