Microsoft has started removing the Copilot branding from Notepad in Windows 11, with a new preview build now available to all Windows Insiders. The update replaces the Copilot icon with a pen icon and renames the AI menu to "writing tools." The core functionality remains the same.

The update is included in Notepad version 11.2512.28.0. References to AI and Copilot in Notepad's Settings have also been removed, with the toggle to enable or disable the AI writing features now found under "Advanced features."

Microsoft’s Broader Effort to Remove Copilot Branding in Windows 11

Microsoft confirmed in January that it plans to remove or rebrand Copilot features across several in-box Windows 11 applications. The company said it was looking at how to streamline AI features throughout the operating system, with Copilot buttons in various apps likely to be removed or replaced.

Notepad appears to be the first app to undergo this change. Microsoft has indicated that Paint, which also includes Copilot integration, and File Explorer, which has multiple Copilot hooks, are probably next in line for similar updates.

The rebranding does not eliminate the AI functionality. Users who do not want the writing tools can still disable them through Notepad's Advanced features settings. The change only affects how the features are labeled and presented, not their capabilities.

Microsoft has not provided a timeline for when the Copilot rebranding will be applied to other Windows 11 apps or when the Notepad update will be available to non-Insider users.

  3. How to disable copilot in Windows 11 23H2?

There is a solution to keep Copilot out of your eyesight, it does not permanently remove or uninstall Copilot from your Windows 11 environment. Microsoft is persistent and Copilot is inevitable, not to mention the latest computers are equipped with a dedicated Copilot Key in the keyboard. Hence, it is up to us to get used to this feature, and also the field of AI is exponentially increasing, so it is better to get used to it. However, the simple solution is to disable copilot via Taskbar as you mentioned that Policy Editor didn't help. The following are the steps.

    • Go to Windows Settings.
    • Click on Personalization.
    • Under Taskbar, you can find Copilot (preview)
    • Toggle the switch to Off.
    • In this way, Copilot can be kept out of sight.

I hope the same works for you.

An image of the Microsoft Copilot app in Teams, responding to a question based on the user's Graph data How is it different from the current experience in Teams? Its better than the current Microsoft 365 Chat in Teams. The new Copilot in Teams is easier to find, to use, and has better functionality for a better experience. This will give you the same Copilot experience in Teams as you get from microsoft365.com, Bing, and copilot.microsoft.com. What’s the difference between the Copilot app in the Teams app store and the Copilot pinned above chats? Theyre the same, and its up to you how youd like to use Copilot. The new Copilot app experience is an improved version of the previous M365 Chat app. If you still have Microsoft 365 Chat (or M365 Chat), this is the older version and we recommend unpinning. When will this be available? The new pinned Copilot app in Teams is rolling out now. Where can I find it and how do I get started? If you have a Copilot for Microsoft 365, the new app will be automatically pinned above your chats. Just open Teams, select chats and youll see Copilot. Open Copilot and start catching up, creating, and asking! Learn more. Source: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/...s/ba-p/4055040
