Microsoft search index, protect & filter high CPU usage when Dropbox is connected

    Hi all,

I have a new laptop and synched the Dropbox desktop app smart sync. I have many files in my Dropbox and the indexing took forever at 100% CPU at some point. Everytime Dropbox now synchronizes new files even if just very few, but also after it has been fully updated and shows no activity, Microsoft Windows Search Indexing, Protect and Filter use 30%+ of CPU. Only after I fully terminate Dropbox, things get back to normal. I have a lot of files in my Dropbox, but never had this problem with previous laptops especially using smart sync. Any ideas? Thanks!

    :)

  2. High Usage of Memory and CPU

Dear community, I need help in fixing high usage of CPU by "Microsoft Windows Search Index" and high usage of CPU by "Search" . I've tried some methods from browsing, but it still won't help to reduce the usage.

For "Microsoft Windows Search Index", I've tried to rebuild the indexing and already finished indexing, but it won't reduce the usage.

Please help me to resolve this, because those two affects my laptop performance and sometimes they stall some of my programs.

    Thank you in advance.

    Not searching my dropbox

    Hi Erie,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

You may answer these questions to get more clarity on this issue:

    • Do you have the Dropbox app installed on the problem PC?
    • Did you make any changes to the problem PC?

If the app is installed, then to access your Dropbox folders, open up the File Explorer on the PC and you'll see the icon in the side bar on the left.

Try using the Search and Indexing troubleshooter to fix the problem. It makes sure that the Windows Search service is running, and checks to see whether you have the correct permissions to search all the directories on your computer.

    • Go to Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting.
    • Click View all, and then click Search and Indexing to run the tool.

You can also try to rebuild the index in the Dropbox to check if that helps.

    Follow these steps:

    • Click Start, type indexing and click on Indexing Options in search results.
    • In the Indexing Options dialog, click Advanced. Under Troubleshooting section, click Rebuild.
Note that if Windows detects user activity in the system, indexing is slowed down drastically. After a couple of minutes of no user activity, indexing continues in full swing.

    Hope this helps.

Let us know if you got the help you needed by clicking ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
