Microsoft Revamps Download Center with SilverLight

Microsoft recently launched the beta version of the new Microsoft Download Center website that intends to be more convenient and easier to navigate than the current version. The new website is powered by SilverLight technology which is Microsoft’s anti-creation of Adobe Flash. You must have the SilverLight plugin for Firefox or Internet Explorer in order to view this new beta site. From now on when you enter the Download Center you'll be asked to try the new SilverLight Beta Center.

Microsoft Silverlight enabled but not working

Thanks for the suggestion Charles. I implemented those steps and now Firefox is prompting me to install Silverlight even though it is already downloaded. IE still showing me Silverlight is enabled but it is still not playing any video.

 

Microsoft Throwing Silverlight Under The Bus?

At Mix2011, Giordio Sarvo giving a presentation to Silverlight developers, seemed to have a hard time justifying the Silverlight platform as a complete solution as HTML 5 (which Microsoft is supporting in their new browsers) becomes more capable to do the things that previously were Silverlight's domain.

He more or less suggested that Silverlight would be relegated to "offline" uses (such as mobile devices) and that Microsoft's main push was going to be the emergent HTML 5.

HTML 5 has not obsoleted Silverlight at this point, but in time it looks like it will become irrelevant in the big picture.
