Hi,A colleague is using a Plantronics headset on his laptop. when he presses Windows Logo + H key, the speech app comes up, when he presses the microphone button he then gets "Make sure your microphone is on then try again". I've checked all permissions on Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone and they are all set to allow. I've checked sounds too and asked him to speak in to the microphone and its definitely being picked up. I've updated to latest windows update KB5041585. Can anyone please advise?System info:Lenovo 82C70010UKMicrosoft Windows 11 Enterprise N x64AMD Ryzen 3 3250

  2. setting up microphone for speech recognition

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand your concern as you are trying to setup speech recognition on the PC.
In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below.

    • What is the Windows 10 version and Build installed? (Type
      winver in Windows search/Run command)
    • When you say that “the box is grey and unresponsive”, where you are seeing this option?
    • Are you able to connect the microphone to the PC? (Does it show in Device Manager)

Meanwhile we would suggest you to perform these steps and check if you are able to setup the microphone.

Steps to set up a microphone: Before you set up Speech Recognition, make sure you've plugged the microphone into your PC so the following steps work.

    1. Press Windows + Q or click on the Windows Search.
    2. Enter Set up a microphone in the search box, and then tap or click
      Set up a microphone.
    3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
    4. Once you are able to setup the microphone and then check if it’s working.

What languages does Microsoft Speech Recognition and Text-to-Speech platform support for Windows 10?

I found the Speech Recognition and Text-to-Speech Engines for Microsoft supported Languages

    (Version 11)
but it does not list Windows 10 as a supported Operating System. My main question is what languages does Microsoft Speech Recognition and Text-to-Speech platform support for Windows 10?

    Thanks

    Speech to Text

    Hello,
Thank you for guiding me in the right direction.

I attempted all of the 6 steps recommended above. Only issue was that for step 4, I could not access/did not have access to the "hardware and devices troubleshooter" for whatever reason. Even after a reset of the Surface, I am still unable to set-up the
speech recognition with the onboard microphone. The sound/audio works just fine for everything else though.

I have purchased an external microphone for use on other apps and this microphone will suffice for what I intended to accomplish. It has been set up for speech recognition and is working properly. I do have one related question that I have not researched
in depth: How do I use the speech recognition to perform speech-to-text, into a program such as Word or Scrivener? The best response I found was that I can use it to complete a sentence or two, but not continual speech-to-text similar to Dragon Dictate or
text messaging on some phones, etc. Can it be set up to perform this continual typing while speaking?

    Thanks again,

    Doug
