Windows 10: Microsoft Store Crashes - Denied Access Generic Read on times.ttf

Something is seriously wrong with the Microsoft Store on my PC. It loads Ok but as soon as I click on an application it shows a spinning cursor and then crashes to desktop.


Process monitor shows the following error on times.ttf: immediately before the crash:


ACCESS DENIED - Desired Access: Generic Read, Disposition: Open, Options: Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory File, Random Access, Disallow Exclusive, Attributes: n/a, ShareMode: Read, Write, Delete, AllocationSize: n/a


Reinstalling the font by dropping it on the c:\windows\fonts folder allows it to work for a matter of seconds, literally. Then the error returns and it crashes. The only long term effect is another copy of the font.


I'm getting seriously frustrated here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Windows Store has a on dependency on Edgehtml.dll to render various aspects of the interface. So you are right about the font: the exception code hresult exception 0x88985004 = DWRITE_E_FILEACCESS, more specifically: A font file exists but could not
be opened due to access denied, sharing violation, or similar error.

Something has hijacked (not maliciously) times.ttf, likely a 3rd party program that has registered the font in a different location. You should be able to ascertain which program from the procmon trace has the font, just filter to procmon for file processes
and search for instances of times.ttf. You can also upload the procmon trace and I can take a look.

It does exist. There's times.ttf, times_0.ttf, times_1.ttf and times_2.ttf. All are the same size and date (1,006,088 bytes and with a date of 7/9/2015)

There are probably multiple copies because I tried reinstalling the font by dragging it into the C:\Windows\Font directory once I realized that the problem was related to the times font. Oddly enough it worked briefly (seconds) after trying that but it
then quickly reverted to the original behavior.
