Windows 10: Microsoft Surface - Can't open start menu, search bar, any apps or settings, etc.

Hey there! I just got a Surface Pro (Model 1796) from eBay. It's a barely used device and was presumably reset before purchase. I set up Windows 10 and my account but, after trying numerous fixes multiple times, I cannot access my start menu, search bar, settings, and most software. I've even tried running things like Microsoft Edge from the CMD with failure messages.


I've tried restarting File Explorer, resetting Windows 10 to factory default, running sfc/ scannow, and this fix:

...to no avail. I've restarted my Surface after most of these attempts to see if that helps, but I've had no success resolving the problem in any way for several hours. And because I can't access the settings (even manually through CMD), that has made things complicated. I'm at a loss at this point as to what will work since I feel like I've tried all of the fixes that have seemed user-friendly enough to me (ha ha). Any ideas how I should proceed?


I also tried to go back to a previous Windows version to no effect because of a generically described error from the recovery screen, so that wasn't an option.


While the link I shared did result in corrupt files fixed (again, to no avail), I did get a log with sfc/ scannow that gave me some corrupt files that need to be fixed. Perhaps this may be a clue to finding out what I should do? I can provide a link if needed.


Unfortunately, I have no idea what to look for and what I would do with any of that information, so if anyone can help, I would so greatly appreciate it! And if you need me to provide anything else that might help, just let me know.

Issues with accessing apps throuhg Start Menu and Search bar on windows10.

This issue might occur if some system files is corrupt.



To assist you better, please provided us the information below:

• Are you getting any error message when you click on Start Menu?

I suggest you to follow the steps provided in Microsoft Help Article about Start menu issues and also try to start Windows Search service. Check if it helps.



Step 1: I recommend you to refer to the suggestion provided in the Microsoft Help Article and check if it helps.

Step 2: I suggest you to try to start Windows Search services
and check if it helps.

1. Press Windows Key + R Key.

2. Type "services.msc" without the quotes and click on it.

3. Search for Windows Search.

4. Double click on it and under Startup type, select
Automatic.

5. Then click on Start button.


Note: If you are not able to change the Startup type, then continue starting the service by clicking on Start button.

1. The Search bar in Widows 10 is more fast and easy. You can search your program by typing it in Search bar.

2. You can use the exact interface of Start menu of Windows 8 in Windows 10. Follow the steps below.

• Click Start menu and select "Settings".
• Click on "Personalization" and select "Start".
• Turn "Use Start full screen"
