Windows 10: Microsoft Teams personal features now available to desktop and web

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, itâs become a challenge for many of us to balance the various aspects of our lives. Whether itâs our jobs, homeschooling our kids, or coordinating virtual meetups with friends, managing all of this on a daily basis can get stressful. As a result, tools that help us stay on track and free up time for recharging have become more and more critical. Ever since we expanded Microsoft Teams beyond work and school and announced the preview of personal features in the Teams mobile app, I have found it helpful to organize and plan activities in my day-to-day life. From using tasks to track my grocery shopping list to scheduling virtual birthday celebrations, Teams has become my all-in-one hub for organizing my personal life.

Today, we are excited to announce the preview of more new personal features in Teams that will make it even easier to manage and plan your days. To begin with, you can now add your personal account in the Teams desktop or web app to chat with or call friends and family. With group chat and video calling now available on both desktop and mobile, connecting and organizing with loved ones will be easier than ever before, especially with holidays around the corner. We are also adding new features in preview in the Teams mobile app, such as the ability to chat with friends or family who donât have Teams on their phones1, location alerts that let you know when someone leaves or arrives at designated locations2, and more.

Chat and call friends and familyâright from your desktop

Since most people started working from home, the time we spend on our computers has risen dramatically. If you use your computer to send work emails and your phone to chat with friends and family, it can become difficult to keep track of incoming messages across all your devices. We want to make it easier for you to stay on top of your important communicationsâacross your work and personal lifeâwithout having to constantly switch between devices. Now, you can add your personal account in the Teams desktop or web app and sync all your chats to your computer so you can carry on conversations on whatever device you prefer. Plus, you can use the Teams desktop or web app to call friends and family, even if they donât have Teams installed, making it easier to connect with loved ones during the holidays. Your work and personal accounts open in different windows or browser tabs on your computer, making it easy to keep them separate.

The following features are now available in preview in the Teams desktop and web apps, with more features coming soon:

Start a personal chat or create a group chat with up to 250 people.

Seamlessly sync your existing chats from your phone to your computer and carry-on conversations on the device of your choice.

Talk all day for free with friends and family via video or audio calls.3

Share video meeting invites with anyone, even if they donât have Teams, and see up to 49 of your friends and loved ones in one frame in Gallery view or Together mode.

Upload and share photos and videos from your computer in any personal or group chat.

To start using personal features in Teams on your computer, follow these steps:

If you are new to Teams, download the Teams desktop app and sign in with a personal Microsoft account or create a new one to get started.

If you currently use the Teams desktop app at work, click on your profile picture on the top-right corner and select âAdd personal accountâ. Upon successful login, Teams will launch a new window containing your personal chats and groups so itâs easy to switch between your work and personal accounts.

Note: We are slowly rolling out the option to add a personal account to existing commercial users. So, if you donât see this option to add your personal account, you may have to wait until your app is updated or for your IT admin to enable it within your organization.

If you want to use the personal features in Teams in your web browser, go to this link and sign in or create a new personal Microsoft account to get started.

While you can use the Teams desktop and web apps to chat with or call friends and family, we are working on bringing all the other personal features available in the Teams mobile app to desktop and web soon.

Adding more features in preview on the Teams mobile app

We are also introducing new features in preview in the Microsoft Teams mobile app to make it easier to stay connected with loved ones.

Chat with people in Teams, even if they are not using the app

When starting a group chat with your friends or family, you shouldnât have to worry about whether they will miss your chats if they donât have Teams. This is why we are previewing a new feature on our Teams iOS and Android apps that allows you to chat with contacts who donât have Teams installed on their phones. Simply type a contactâs name or phone number to add them to a group chat and, if they are not on Teams, they can receive and send replies to the group via SMS, keeping the conversation flowing1. SMS participants will also get a link to download the Teams app on their phone making it easy to get started on Teams and take full advantage of rich media messaging and chat via GIFs, images, or videos.

This feature is available in preview for users in the US and Canada. You can learn more about this feature here.

Get notified when loved ones leave or arrive at a location

As we all begin to responsibly step out of our homes, we are releasing new location features in preview that will make it easier for your loved ones to receive updates about your physical whereabouts. Starting today, you can allow your loved ones to receive automatic alerts whenever you leave or arrive at a designated location2. So, if you are stepping out of your home on a daily basis, you can choose to let your family get automatic departure or arrival alerts so that they know when you will be back home.

In addition to these, we are also introducing the following new mobile features:

Add group events from your chats to your deviceâs calendar.

Get task and location updates in your activity feed.

Add a photo to your personal Safe.

The new features have started to roll out in preview on the Teams mobile app and will be fully rolled out in the coming weeks. To get started, download the Teams mobile app from the iOS or Android app store.

We are excited about continuing to preview more features in Teams that make it easier for you to organize and manage your personal life. While today is another step in that direction, we are continuing our efforts to bring even more features to you across all devices as we work towards making these features generally available. Microsoft Lists in Microsoft Teams is now generally available

Today, we are proud to announce the general availability of the Lists app in Teams for all our commercial and GCC customers. As you might already know, Microsoft Lists, which we announced at Build 2020 is a Microsoft 365 app that helps you track information and organize your work. Lists are simple, smart, and flexible, so you can stay on top of what matters most to your team. Track patients, loans, issues, assets, routines, contacts, inventory and more using customizable views and smart rules and alerts to keep everyone in sync. With ready-made templates, you can quickly create lists from directly within Teams and access them on the Teams mobile app by accessing the Lists tab you added as a channel.

Introducing the Lists app in Teams

The vision of the Lists app in Teams is to bring all the collaboration and communication modalities to lists and list items, so it is easy to get work done.

Lists in Teams is supported as a team based tab app built on top of the Microsoft Teams platform and supports the following features:

New list creation from scratch, from templates (8 standard templates and 3 industry specific ones: Patients, Loans, and Incidents), from Excel table data and from an existing list.

Importing existing team lists as new tabs.

All standard list features that you can access in SharePoint web: column types, view formatting, Quick Edit, exporting to Excel, sorting, filtering, etc.

The ability to have a channel conversation about a list item (see below for more details).

All user actions on the list are audited and available in the Security and compliance center audit logging.

How do I get started?

To get started, simply go to any channel where you would like to start tracking a list and hit the “+” button to explore the tab gallery and select the Lists app. Once the tab is added you can either create a new list or bring in an existing list (from another team or an older SharePoint site, but not a personal list from Lists home) into the channel as a new tab.

The Lists app in Teams includes 3 new industry-specific templates – Patients, Loans and Incidents. Team members start managing and tracking these key entities. Here are some examples of how these templates can be leveraged.

Create a new list from within Microsoft Teams and choose from numerous ready-made templates, including the new industry-specific ones.

Healthcare organizations can use the Lists app in Teams to support patient rounding, multi-discplinary huddles and discharge planning. The Patients template is an easy way for all health teams to track patient progress and keep in touch with their peers. Government agencies can use the Lists app in Teams to track incidents and coordinated incident response. The Incidents template helps people quickly setup a list and get started.

Loan officers at a morgtage broker or bank can use the Lists app to track a set of loans and informally collaborate on advancing a them to approval. The Loans template helps them get started with plenty of scope for further customization.

How do I start a conversation alongside a list item?

Once you have configured the tab and have a list with list items, you can start a conversation about an individual list item. Go to the details view (or form) for the list item by clicking into the title field and then click on conversation to start a conversation about the list item on the channel. With this feature, you can collaborate with your team about the list item (your key business entities) and get work done, faster.

Since the conversation is a channel message in Teams, all the messaging features like @mentions, rich text, giphies, stickers, emojis, mentions, tagging, and attachments are available for use! The conversation shows up in the right rail for the list item and also on the channel for those who might not have viewed the list as yet.

You can chat side-by-side individual list items within Teams.

Just go to your Teams android or iOS mobile apps and go to the channel where you have added the Lists app and click on more and tap on the tab name to open up the list.

Microsoft Whiteboard now available for the web and integrated in Teams

Today we are excited to announce the general availability of Whiteboard for the web and integration with Teams meetings, releases that continue our journey to enable people to ideate and create from any device, anywhere.

Easily collaborate with others or access your boards from any device

Today we’re making Microsoft Whiteboard for the web available for all commercial Office customers. It is available on the all apps list under office.com or directly at whiteboard.microsoft.com. We believe that the best results come when everyone participates and this release makes Whiteboard available on all your organization, school or employee devices including PCs, tablets and phones running Windows, MacOS, iOS and Android. Whiteboard for the web provides the ability to collaborate in real-time with others as well as access your existing boards. Whiteboard for the web is an important part of the Whiteboard family of clients as it makes Whiteboard available on all devices and in Teams. We are starting from an experience that is focused on real-time inking but are committed to bringing additional functionality from our native apps over time.

Run effective Teams meeting with Whiteboard

We are excited to bring Whiteboard to Teams meetings. Customers can now easily add a whiteboard to any Teams meeting by clicking on Whiteboard under the Share option. The newly created whiteboard will be automatically shared with all meeting participants and available for them to start collaborating without leaving the Teams experience. A new Whiteboard tab will also be added to the meeting to make is easy to access the board after the meeting.

Adding a Whiteboard to a Teams meeting is useful for a variety of scenarios such as diagramming collaboratively, expressing ideas, capturing agenda items and follow ups, remote training, and more. Microsoft Teams PWA preview available for Windows 10 S devices

Today at Build 2018, Microsoft Teams is announcing a range of new capabilities and integrations to build and manage tailored apps for your enterprise using the Teams developer platform. Extending the power of Office 365 and Microsoft Graph APIs, IT professionals can create, curate, and distribute an enterprise catalog of apps for Teams while automating team and channel management to fit your organization. Tailoring your teamwork is now even easier through new integrations and shared developer capabilities experiences with other Office 365 applications, including SharePoint and Outlook.

Build will continue the momentum developed in late March 2018 during Enterprise Connect, where Microsoft Teams celebrated its one-year anniversary and shared that over 200K organizations are using the platform. We also announced new capabilities coming to Teams later this year such as Cloud recording, Inline message translation, Background blur on video in meetings, Proximity detection for Teams meetings, Mobile sharing in meetings, and Cortana voice interactions for Teams-enabled devices, all supporting our vision for Intelligent Communications (check out the most recent updates for May)

At Build we are excited to announce the preview of the Teams app for the Microsoft Store. This release marks an important step in our ongoing efforts to support Progressive Web App (PWA) capabilities in Windows, using Edge based rendering and combining web technologies with native OS capabilities to deliver an innovative new experience. As a Store app, it is installed and managed through the Microsoft Store, supports the Narrator screen reader, and integrates with the Windows 10 Action Center. For Public Preview, the Teams Store app is only available for Windows 10 S / S-mode devices.

We continue to add new capabilities on a regular basis to make Teams an even more powerful hub for teamwork. For customers pushing the boundary of teamwork and mixed reality , learn more about the Microsoft Remote Assist announcement from earlier today at Build.

This week at the conference, we’ll be focusing on opportunities in four areas to “do more” with tailored Teams apps:

Get Started – Today you can use tabs to bring content into conversations, check out the following features that provide you more control over your content

Apps in Chat—coming soon to developer Preview, you can now update your app so that it can be used in private 1:1 and group chats. Your users can add a tab or chat with a bot in their private chats to light up new collaboration and sharing scenarios.

SharePoint pages in Teams—SharePoint is now even more deeply integrated into Teams—with the latest integration you can pin a SharePoint page in your channels to enable deeper collaboration around sites and other SharePoint content, and get the full power of the SharePoint app platform within Teams.

Teams App Studio – debuted in January in preview, Teams App Studio streamlines and automates the development process for creating Microsoft Teams apps by helping you to define your app’s manifest through simple forms, In the next few months Teams App Studio will be able to save your app manifest in the cloud and provide in-app registration with Microsoft Bot Framework.

Enhance Conversations – Today you can use Azure bot services for natural language interaction and provide structured commands through messaging extensions, check out these new features to enhance conversations

Adaptive card support—coming soon to developer Preview, you can now send rich Adaptive cards from your bot, connector, or messaging extension. Adaptive cards allow you to send more flexible content in conversations and are supported on other Microsoft platforms such as Outlook, Windows, and Cortana.

Files support for bots—coming soon to developer Preview, your bot can now send and receive files in 1:1 chats with users. Enable content and document scenarios such as expense reports, file management, and image processing.

Distribute and manage your teams and apps – Make your apps available to users with the right controls. Check out the following new features to customize your teams within the enterprise

Tailored Teams created through the New Teams APIs in Microsoft Graph—use enhanced Microsoft Graph APIs to programmatically manage Teams resources and content including teams, channels, and conversations. We will be releasing the following APIs from preview to General Availability this summer: creating and deleting teams and channels; adding and remove team members and owners; and updating team and channel properties.

Enterprise app sharing through Teams enterprise catalog for apps - control access to custom Teams apps and distribute apps to users within the organizations by publishing to your company’s catalog in the Teams app store. Manage the catalog via PowerShell cmdlets, Graph APIs, and even through the Teams client itself.

Try the new features and provide feedback using the feedback link in the lower left corner of Microsoft Teams.
