Microsoft to deprioritize Office Mobile apps development for Windows 10

Microsoft has been working on a number of different versions of its Office apps for Windows. Microsoft has a UWP version of Office apps called Word Mobile, Excel Mobile and PowerPoint. There’s also a Win32 version of the app that is updated regularly with new features. UWP apps, on the other hand, rarely gets any updates.

At Ignite 2018, Microsoft revealed that the software maker has stopped developing new features for its Office mobile app as it wants to focus on the development of the Win32 app.

Office Mobile for Windows 10 was originally designed to run on Windows Phones and tablets with a 10-inch display. But has Windows Phone been discontinued, the company is also planning to give up on Office Mobile apps and concentrate on Win32 version of the productivity suite.

In a statement, the software giant has made it clear that it wants to focus on Win32 and web apps.

“The Office mobile apps for Windows have not been deprecated. But for mobile, we are currently prioritizing development for the iOS and Android versions of our apps; and on Windows, we are prioritizing Win32 and web versions of our apps,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement.

What’s more important to understand is that the app also worked on tablets, Surface Hub and HoloLens.

    Spoiler Office 2019
Last year at Ignite, we announced Office 2019 – the next perpetual version of Office that includes apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Skype for Business) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). Today we’re pleased to share the following updates:

    • Office 2019 will ship in H2 of 2018. Previews of the new apps and servers will start shipping in the second quarter of 2018.
    • Office 2019 apps will be supported on:
      • Any supported Windows 10 SAC release
      • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2018
      • The next LTSC release of Windows Server
    • The Office 2019 client apps will be released with Click-to-Run installation technology only. We will not provide MSI as a deployment methodology for Office 2019 clients. We will continue to provide MSI for Office Server products.

  3. Microsoft Selects Dolby Audio for Windows 10

it would've been great if microsoft added HEVC decoders, LAV filters along with other codecs with Windows 10, and developing WMP to be better than VLC, KMPlayer and such sorts of media players.

Nevertheless, this is good step for microsoft, by far.

Microsoft Office 2019 Will Run on Windows 10, and Only Windows 10

How is this news or surprising to anyone?
Especially when there are viable and arguably better open-source alternatives out there.. For those of us who don't use Microsoft Office, this isn't a problem.
