Windows 10: Microsoft unveils new Click to Do features for Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft has introduced some new features for Copilot+ PCs, as part of the latest Windows 11 Preview. Among the notable updates in this build are enhancements for text actions.

Click to Do now has 2 new options: “Practice in Reading Coach”, and “Read with Immersive Reader”. Users can improve their reading fluency and pronunciation with the Click to Do by highlighting text and selecting the "Practice in Reading coach" action. Users can then read the text out loud, and the Reading Coach app will provide feedback, and guides them about where to make improvements.

Similarly, users can select the “Read with Immersive Reader” option to switch to a distraction-free mode to read the text. This feature is customizable, you can change the size of the text, spacing, font, or background theme. Users may also listen to the text read aloud, or improve their grammar by using syllable break to split words, highlight nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

Microsoft is also making a change for users from the European Economic Area, these users can now search for images that they saved in the cloud, directly from Windows Search on the taskbar. Copilot+ PC users can search for the images by describing the content in the pictures, for example, “European castles” or “summer picnics”. The AI will return exact matches for the keywords from your cloud files.

These features are being rolled out to the Beta Channel via Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3872 (KB5055640). However, not all Copilot+ PC users will benefit from these features simultaneously. Microsoft says that Snapdragon-based devices will get these new enhancements first, and that it plans to extend the features to AMD and Intel powered Copilot PCs in the near future.

In addition to the Copilot+ PC features, the latest preview build allows users to add custom words to the dictionary in voice access, to increase the probability of recognizing the words. The feature will be available in all the currently supported voice access languages i.e. English, French, German, Spanish and Chinese.

Unveiling Copilot

At its Surface event on Thursday, September 21st, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft announced Copilot, which it describes as an everyday AI companion.

Copilot will be available across Microsoft 365, which includes apps like Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, Bing, Edge PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneDrive, and more, and will be built into Windows. “We believe Copilot will fundamentally transform our relationship with technology,” said Satya Nadela, Microsoft’s CEO.

Copilot will be available on Windows 11, and users will be able to launch it with a single click. Microsoft describes it as a “handshake” between you and tech.

It will roll out on September 26th with Windows update 23H2. In addition to Copilot, the Windows 11 update will also have passkey, layers in paint, revamped photos and a new outlook app.

Further, OpenAI’s Dall-E 3 is rolling out for Bing, allowing users to create and modify images directly in the Bing Chat interface. These images will be marked as created by AI. Additionally, users would also be able to search for queries with image input. For example, you’ll be able to input a photo of a charger and ask Bing if it will work in a different country that you plan to visit.

For emails, Copilot will feature a ‘Sound Like Me,’ feature that learns the way you type and mimics your email style, so AI-generated emails sound like they were written by you.

Microsoft’s event is ongoing, and this story will soon be updated with more information about Copilot.

Copilot added to DevTools in Microsoft Edge

We’re very excited to announce that, starting with Microsoft Edge 120, we’re making a new experimental DevTools feature available to all. You can now ask DevTools to explain any error or warning, and any code snippet by using Copilot in Edge. Whether you’re new to web development or have already been building websites, errors and warnings in the DevTools Console is something you probably deal with all the time. While some errors make sense and help you correct bugs, some can be very obscure or even scary. Can you confidently say what the following errors mean, without searching? Code:

These errors can very often feel cryptic, especially when learning web development. But they also play a very important role in learning. They’re how the browser tells you something’s wrong, where it’s wrong, and perhaps how to fix the problem. Unlike other languages, JavaScript doesn’t require a compilation step to run. C++ or Rust, for example, give you a lot of information at compilation time. With JavaScript, these runtime errors in the DevTools console are often your only way to know something’s wrong. But let’s face it, compilers and JS engines are similar in that they don’t always make it easy to understand what they’re trying to say. Common solutions include:

Searching for the error message online, hoping to find a useful answer.

Or asking a coworker for help.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t always lead to a good solution. For instance, what if no one has written a clear explanation for your particular problem online? What if you don’t have a coworker who can help you right now? What if you’re focused on your code and don’t want to get distracted by going to another website? Given the right context, Copilot in Edge can reason about complex problems and easily find custom solutions for them. If you use Microsoft Edge for your web development, you already have access to Copilot in Edge. You can already use Copilot in the Microsoft Edge sidebar to generate text or images, or search for web results. Starting with Microsoft Edge version 120, you can now ask Copilot to explain console errors and warnings, as well as source code, right from where you need it in DevTools!

With Copilot in Edge integrated into DevTools you can:

When you do any of these two actions, the Copilot in Edge sidebar appears, and a conversation about the error, warning, or code that you selected starts. DevTools provides all the context that Copilot needs to reason about the particular problem you’re facing. Copilot generates an explanation, and you can then keep conversing if you want to keep on learning. We’re excited about the possibilities and truly believe that AI, when applied responsibly to specific web development problems, can be a very effective ally. This is only the beginning, and we have more ideas. But first, we’d love for you to try this new experimental feature and let us know what you think.
