Windows 10: Microsoft update killed my hard drive, when I replaced it my activation key no longer works

Hi all,So a few months ago I clicked update on my computer and upon restarting, the computer would constantly crash and restart over and over again. It started every few minutes, then the distance got shorter and shorter until the computer was just broken. I really liked my computer up until this point so I spent $200 replacing the hard drive and that fixed the issue. Microsoft updates should not break your computer but from what I heard the company does not refund costs for this type of expense. Please let me know if that isn't true!My computer now runs great but there is a constant water

An update can't 'kill' your hard drive, so any expert who tells you that is no expert.

How did you determine that your hard drive was killed, whatever that means? For example, did you receive a S.M.A.R.T alert? Did the hard drive manufacturer's own diagnostic utility tell you that your drive is no longer usable?

How do I activate Windows 10 after replacing my hard drive. I tried windows key and X as suggested and find "no administrative" space to fill in. I have my old windows xp disc with a number on it.

 

Hard drive replacement & key code questions

I have an old computer that I need to replace the hard drive on. It came with windows 8 and was upgraded to windows 10 for free somewhere along the way. I do not have an activation key or any way to access that information on this computer because I can’t get back to the desktop. I was looking at purchasing a new hard drive with windows 10 pre-installed but I don’t know how the activation key works. Will my Microsoft account have that info because when I logged into my account looking for info it didn’t have a key code for this computer. Or do I have a license agreement because windows 10 was a free upgrade? Can someone give me a clue on how all this works before I buy a hard drive. Thanks.
