Microsoft: Windows 10 or Windows 11 need eight hours to install updates smoothly

Windows Update is one of the reasons why people criticize Windows. Over the past few years, Microsoft has made various changes and improvements to improve the performance of Windows Update.

For example, Microsoft started offering driver updates via a new optional update page. The company also added features like active hours, servicing stack updates, experience packs, update stack packages, smaller update packages, enablement package concept, and the ability to pause Windows Update on Windows Home edition.

As you might have noticed, Microsoft has also made significant changes to its AI and ML model to better understand why and how Windows Updates are failing on some configurations. It turns out that one of the most important factors is the duration of the device’s uptime and its connection to Windows Update.

If you frequently turn off your device or disconnect it from the internet, you won’t be able to successfully install quality and feature updates. This is the case even when the device is not downloading Windows Update. When a device doesn’t meet a certain amount of connected time are more vulnerable to Windows Update failures.

Specifically, Microsoft’s internal data shows that devices need at least eight hours to successful install Windows Update and apply its changes. This includes a minimum of two continuous connected hours and six total connected hours after an update is available for download.

“This allows for a successful download and background installations that are able to restart or resume once a device is active and connected,” Microsoft noted in a new blog post.

Microsoft revealed that 50% of outdated devices do not meet the minimum Update Connectivity measurement.

If you’re having a hard time dealing with Windows Update, you can also follow a few tips Microsoft today shared last year. According to the company, you must install Windows on a faster drive (SSDs), which can speed up the installation process by up to six times as compared to HDD.

Additionally, Microsoft also wants you to use a single antivirus or file system filter driver instead of Windows Defender with a 3rd party antivirus. Windows Updates may not work properly if you use two security solutions at the same time.

  2. New install Windows 10 (issue solved)

It's good that you're not experiencing any issues. Unfortunately many folks are, a quick Google search will show the same info im offering the OP.

    Heres a couple examples:

    Here

    Here

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update problems and complaints
    • Installation problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Microsoft Edge problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Drivers problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Experience problems with the Fall Creators Update
keep in mind, as of recently, the FCU is installed on 5% of devices roughly.....

  3. Installing Windows 10 using Windows 7 key

Nope, you need to install Windows 10 first and make sure the Windows 7 key is transferred to your Windows account after you've installed Windows 10 (not quite sure how that works). I missed the last step and I could not activate Windows 10 after a re-install... Microsoft seem to have done everything they can to make it a PITA. Also, it's technically too late to do this now anyhow, as the upgrade offer has expired. But KMSPico works quite well...

As for getting rid of Windows, delete the Windows folder.

Microsoft: Windows 10 or Windows 11 need eight hours to install updates smoothly

Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?
