Windows 10: Microsoft Windows 11 Update Schedule Seemingly Reaches Far into the Future

One of the key aspects to ship with Windows 11 22H2 is the confirmation of the rumor Ghacks first reported back in July, which is that Microsoft is returning to launching a new version of Windows every three years. This put a halt to the yearly feature update cycle we had been led to believe would take Windows 11 forward, replacing it with a newer “Moment” update cycle. It now looks like there may be at least three more Windows Moment Updates in development, which could possibly mean all Moment updates leading up to Windows 12 may already be slated for development.



We recently saw the launch of the Moment 1 update, which shipped in October with key features including File Explorer Tabs, Suggested Actions, a Taskbar overflow option, improvements to the Photos app, and more. Moment 2 has already been confirmed as in development by Windows Insiders and is due for launch early next, as well as the Moments moniker also being confirmed as the internal point of reference at Microsoft for the updates.

Since those reports broke, news has also been leaked of a rumored Moments 3 update being on Microsoft’s release schedule although there has been no confirmation of the proposed timeframes for its release. The internal test IDs for the updates, however, which ended up on Twitter clearly indicated the third ID.

Interestingly, a fourth ID has now also been leaked by the same Windows Insider researcher who broke the news of the third Moments ID.

This means that we could be seeing here the test development schedule for all the remaining Moments updates that will take us to Windows 12. On the other hand, however, there is also a chance, as has been commented on by the leaker himself, that the speed with which these test IDs are being generated means they are for tests of something completely different and don’t refer to future Moments updates at all. The key to watch out for here is whether a fifth test ID is added to the schedule sometime soon. If that happens, the likelihood of these being test-scheduling IDs for future Windows 11 updates becomes less likely.

Two major Windows 10 updates scheduled for 2017




It may come as no surprise, but Microsoft won't release another major update for Windows 10 in 2016. The good news is you can expect two big updates to Microsoft’s latest operating system in 2017.

Microsoft let the information slip in a TechNet blog post published earlier in the week. “Windows 10, version 1607 is our third Windows 10 feature update released,” Microsoft said in the blog post. “Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.”

The blog post appears to confirm reports from the Windows rumor mill about the timing of the next two updates for Windows 10. The first update, dubbed Redstone 2, is expected to roll out in early 2017 with the second, Redstone 3, landing in the summer or early fall, similar to the timing of the recently released Anniversary Update (previously known as Redstone 1).

This schedule would put Microsoft back on a two updates per year schedule similar to the initial rollout of Windows 10, as Windows Central first pointed out. In 2015, Microsoft released Windows 10 (also known as Threshold) in July and then the November Update(dubbed Threshold 2) three months later.

This time around, Redstone 2 is expected to roll out in the spring and then Redstone 3 should hit about four to six months later.

The impact on you at home: Of the two updates, Redstone 2 looks to be the most interesting so far. Not necessarily because of the features, which are believed to be largely things that weren’t ready for the Anniversary Update. The big deal is that the early 2017 update is expected to roll out in concert with new hardware from Microsoft, asZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley first reported back in March.

Early builds of Redstone 2 are expected to roll out to Windows Insiders in the coming weeks.

Microsoft withdraws bad Windows 7 update that broke future Windows 7 updates

"Unfortunately, this apparently simple change has had severe consequences for some users of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, with users reporting that Windows Update, drivers from both Nvidia and AMD, and some third-party software including Virtual Box are all unable to install correctly. Windows 9 is scheduled 2015 wasn't it? So i go for the 'Microsoft and cloud' or other service for enterprise, suggestion.
Too early for Win 9 this year.
