Windows 10: Microsoft Windows - please forget about drive letters, allow to use drive labels

This happens too often. After plugging in a new storage device or temporarily disconnecting one of the hard drives,their letters are messed up. It takes a while to use diskpart, list volume, select volume and assign letter=if it happens once by a serious system failure.but how long can we repeat the same mistake, the mistake we didn't make?Today the most of users have more than one mass storage hard drives, USB drives, SST, portable USB storage, various devices connected to the PCMany users use automated scripts, starting with .bat, .cmd files, ending with automatic backups, remote PC access

help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.

 

How to put drive letters before drive label?

I have Windows 10 Home. I want my drive letters to appear before the name of the drive. I tried:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

ShowDriveLettersFirst DWORD

4 = Show all drive letters before drive label

I rebooted.

But it didn't work.

Is there another way that I can get Windows 10 Home to put drive letters before the name of the drive?

Windows uses MountMgr (Mount Manager) that allows your computer to communicate with connected devices or drivers. Windows should assign a different drive letter to a drive regardless of its type.

For better assistance, please answer the following questions:

• Have you tried renaming the driver and see if the name will be changed?
• Have you tried changing the drive letter on Disk Management?

If you have tried renaming the drive but it's still showing the same letter, try unplugging it (safely) then put it back in. If you haven't, follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key + X and select Disk Management.
• Right-click on the external drive and click on Change Drive letter and Paths.
• Click on Change button.
• Under Assign the following Drive letter, select the desired drive letter.
• Click OK to save the changes.
