Windows 10: Microsoft_AutoUpdate_4.19.20011301_Updater.pkg Reported by AVG Antivirus as a PUP

I use the free version of AVG on a Macbook Pro early 2015, running macOS Mojave. I run Microsoft Office version 16.16.15. After support for Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac ended on October 13, 2020, when running an AVG Antivirus Deep Scan, Microsoft_AutoUpdate_4.19.20011301_Updater.pkg is reported as a threat OtherUP-gen [PUP]; but it will not resolve.



I uninstalled AVG Antivirus and re-installed it. I updated the virus definitions. I went into the Libraries, found Microsoft AutoUpdate.app and moved it to Trash. I searched the Library for "Microsoft," and moved two plist files to Trash:



com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper.plist

com.microsoft.update.agent.plist



I purged the Trash folder. Then I re-ran AVG several times; the same threat is reported and it will not resolve. I guess the Microsoft Office Microsoft_AutoUpdate_4.19.20011301_Updater.pkg software has burrowed itself deeply into my Mac.



I searched the internet and haven't found a solution. A Mr. Rasmussen reported the same issue in the AVG Community; he is using a paid version of AVG. It seems odd that only two people reported this issue so far.



My son’s Macbook Pro late 2011, running High Sierra doesn't have this problem; but he has Microsoft Office version 15.41.



I cannot upgrade my Macbook Pro to Catalina, because I cannot run my Microsoft Office applications on Catalina.

help remove avg antivirus

I am trying to update latest windows update but am told to remove avg antivirus . cant find this anywhere in programs or files. any suggestions

 

How to Uninstall an uninvited AVG Browser; Requested AVG Antivirus.

I reference Dalchina's link - as a very old novice I have to write things down & take series of screen shots and store them in word to refer to constantly. Not being stupid but careful.
I clicked on it - the first response was a popup from Malwarebytes Premium reporting "Web Site blocked due to PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) Learn about PUP if you don't want to block the website you can exclude it from website protections by accessing exclusions. Domain: pchelpsoft.net ; IP address 104.196.239.80 ; Port 443 ; Type Outbound; File C:\Program Files (x86)\...e\Application\Chrome.exe : With the Click Buttons for "Manage Exclusions", or "Close": I did not click a Button.
The Website page I was headed: "thewindowsclub.com/completely-uninstall-avg-clear-remover"
then I Searched information about PUPs .
On the Website's Privacy and Transparency PopUp and with Cookies to be "Click Button Accepted". I clicked "Managed settings" just to see what I am up against PUP's etc. : on the Pop up listing each item you may have to give your permission to do whatever it does, there were 83 pages with 16 separate account permission potential decisions on every page plus the odd3 making a total number of 1314 potential account decisions (The original tempting button for the lot was a single Button). so I went down so I checked every one with permission accepted highlighted and deleted the accecptance.

Then followed the websites instructions to start with option one to Uninstall AVG antivirus
"The Process seems to access the be install AVG Options and on the presented page of options select Uninstall.
This it did then requested Restart Now or later. I chose now as it was 2am.
It closed down and Updated (Windows 10 I Presumed) on restarting. when it was finished I closed down.
I have yet to uninstall the other AVG Program/ Programs on the computer.

 

Overrun by PUP's

Just to be clear, the ROOTKIT scanning setting in MBAM is separate and different from the PUP/PUM settings.
It's certainly fine to enable the anti-rootkit feature, but it's not likely to directly impact the behavior you reported in your original post (recurring PUPs in sequential MBAM scans).
Adding MBAE (Free or Premium) is another fine suggestion, but it won't fix your original issue, either.

To more directly fix that particular problem, it would help to know if your PUP/PUM settings in MBAM are correctly configured, as suggested in my earlier reply #4 here.
And, yes, the partial AdwCleaner log suggests that the PUPs are likely re-spawning from Google sync/Chrome/a Chrome extension.
But it would also help to see the MBAM scan log, as previously suggested.
