Microsoft’s affordable Surface tablets will be primarily aimed at the education market

Last week, we reported that the Microsoft is planning to launch an affordable Surface tablet with Windows 10. Meanwhile, more information about this upcoming device surfaced online.

The upcoming Surface tablet is specially designed by focusing schools and educational institutions. Furthermore, the device won’t be running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor but instead, It will be running on an Intel processor. More details about the processor yet to be declared.

Since the device won’t be running on Snapdragon processor that means it won’t have Windows 10 ARM. In late 2016, at WinHEC, Microsoft partnered with Qualcomm to bring entire Windows 10 experience on a mobile chip (starting with Snapdragon 845). Earlier this year, various partner of Microsoft launched Windows 10 device with Qualcomm processor but there could be a number of reasons why Microsoft is not going to launch their own device with Qualcomm processor. Maybe the company doesn’t want to compromise the quality of the Surface product or company knows of limitations of the platform or they are waiting for something bigger and better.

The so-called “Edu surface” device will offer all day long battery life, Wi-Fi as well as LTE capabilities, USB-C port for ultra-fast charging. In addition, Microsoft is also working on cheaper Surface Accessories including Surface Pen and Surface Keyboard.

This time Microsoft is committed to launch an affordable device since they are targeting the education market. While on another hand, not using the Intel processor and Windows 10 ARM, Microsoft might end up making a high-end device and it will be little costly compared to Qualcomm processor.

Here take a note that, Windows 10 on ARM is not buried alive, Microsoft is working on this project very actively and it’s not ready to ship ‘yet’. The company constantly working on the optimizing the performance of it and maybe by the end of the 2018 or in early 2019, we’ll see the first glimpse of it.

We’ll soon see how Microsoft is going to compete with Apple’s recently launched iPad 2018. The whole story would be up-side-down if Microsoft managed to launch this affordable tablet with Windows 10 ARM. Let us know your thoughts in a comment below.
