Migrating to larger drive with Macrium

I can't seem to get Macrium (paid version) to utilize the full size of a new SSD. I want to restore my Insider version on a larger SSD. But when I restore, its like its doing a clone rather than restore. I've done this in the past without problems, don't know what I'm doing wrong now.

This is how the new drive turns out.

  2. How can I add the memory of my D: drive to my C: drive?

if your D: drive is larger that your C: drive use "mini tool partition wizard" free tool to migrate your system to new hd ssd it is free and you can migrate to larger hard drive or solid state drive and it works then you can use your c drive for extra
    storage.

Disk 2 is your SSD ??
If yes it seems you have successfully copied your old SSD or new one..
But computer is still booting from old one.. Have to tried changing the boot order in BIOS??

No, the problem is the "restore" made the new, larger, SSD the same size as the old one and left 113GB unallocated. It copied OK, but at the same size as the old one.

I tried that program and extended the partition but it screwed up the MBR and Windows couldn't fix it. I booted with a Windows flash drive and tried to Repair but it reported it couldn't fix it.

I downloaded what is supposed to be Preview version ...393 and installed that but it installed a regular Windows Pro, not the Preview version.

You do not need any boot drive etc.

    Install minitool partition wizard free.

Move the two recovery drives to the right end of drive. In fact once can be deleted.

Expand C drive to fill up space.

cereberus, as I noted minitool moved the partition but when I tried to boot it wouldn't boot as the MBR was corrupted. Booting with a Windows flash drive and doing a "Repair", Windows reported it couldn't fix the drive.

I have Win 7 on a separate SSD, Win 10 Pro on a separate SSD and this separate SSD for the preview version. Also a hard drive for backups and my recording studio projects.

Try booting with a Win 7 Installation DVD and running a Startup Repair.
See if that will fix the boot problem.
You might need your Win 7 disk connected to be able to run a Startup Repair this way.

    If that doesn't work,
When restoring the Win 10 Pre partition (Image) in Macrium, click on Restored Partition Properties.
See if you can increase the Partition Size there, and it will keep the OS bootable after restoring.
I need to drag n drop from the Source to the Destination to enable Restored Partition Properties.

Disconnect all drives except the one you want to boot.

Boot from Macrium Reflect Rescue drive.

Select restore tab, and click on link 'fix windows boot problems' and it will delete bcd info and rebuild boot data.

You would probably have to shrink the os drive by say 300 mb to privide enough space.

David E, as previously noted, Repair reports it can't fix it after expanding the partition (and rebuild MBR) with Mimitool partition wizard.

Cerebus, what is that going to get me? I'm trying to recover the unallocated space and make the "c" drive the full size of the SSD. It boots, as is, but the 118GB size is not what I want, I want it the full size of the SSD (minus the two smaller partitions).

I tried creating a new install from what is supposed to be 14393 Preview version, which does give me all of the driver, but all that does is install another "regular" Win 10 install, not an insider version.

I thought you tried repairing with a Win 10 install media and it didn't work.
I suggested trying to do a startup repair with a Win 7 install media.

I fixed an unbootable PC where the bootloader is in the Win 8.1 partition/OS.
The startup repair didn't work with a bootable 8.1 disc, but i did fix the problem using a Win 7 disc.

You are giving conflicting information- you are mixing up two separate issues as far as I can tell.

    Let's start from beginning.

As I understand drive 2 is an image restore from an image backup or a clone (from an external drive?).

Looking at drive 2, all you need to do is move the recovery partitions (or delete them - no real use here anyway), then extend the I drive to use up the unallocated space.

Now it is hard to tell if you need a system reserved partition or not - you probably do but you do not have one. You can have the boot files in same partition as I drive (see C drive for example), but I doubt an Insider version installed like that.

So when you expand the I drive as above, leave around 300 MB space unallocated.

Then disconnect all drives except disk 2 aand use Macrium as I said earlier and it should add the required boot files so it boots.

Of course, you will need to select that disk from bios as the boot drive.

If it fails to boot after this, then there is something wrong with your image or original version you cloned from.

If i wanted to start over with a new SSD after these boot issues i would do a Diskpart Clean on the new SSD.
That should clean up the old MBR that might be causing problems going forward.
