  1. Migrating Windows OS to new SSD

    Hi all,

I have an HP Envy that currently has a 1TB HDD, but I'm expecting a new machine, a Lenovo Thinkpad P53, in the following week or so. That configuration also has a 1TB HDD, however, I also bought an extra 500GB SSD from Crucial and made sure it's compatible with the P53. I understand that the SSD will be a lot faster and so my idea was to have the SSD for the Windows 10 OS and other applications and their files, while keeping the HDD for mass storage and big local files I work a lot with 3D modelling and rendering.

For that, I obviously need to move the OS onto the SSD. The Thinkpad P53 already has Windows preinstalled on it Pro, I believe, and, as such, is installed onto the existing HDD. Is there a way to, once I have the device and the Crucial SSD, sort of "re-install" or migrate the OS onto the new SSD?

I use the word "migrate" because I've seen other posts on here and in other forums and sites that talk about clean installs and the need to have product keys or digital licenses before doing any of this, using third-party software to handle the data/OS installation process., or having a new copy of Windows 10. That is not what I need. Since the P53 will already have Windows running on it, I don't need a new product key or a new clean install. I really just want to see if there is a way to simply move/migrate the OS and all its' related files from the existing HDD onto the new SSD. I plan on keeping both drives inside the machine.

I am fine with some loss of files. I really only care about local files, and also have OneDrive, but am also planning to save very important files onto a USB flash drive. Everything else on my current HP Envy - apps, games, settings, etc. - can be re-installed at a later time. I know it will take a bit longer, but that is fine with me.

Also, the note about product keys and whatnot - how exactly, if it is necessary for what I want to do, does one access that? My HP Envy was bought by my dad almost two years ago at Best Buy with Windows 10 pre-installed. Needless to say, he does not have any of the original packaging. On that Envy, I use my Microsoft Account when my dad bought it, he made a Microsoft Account, but when he gave the laptop to me, I then logged in with mine. Will he, instead of me, have a digital license for Windows on this laptop? Is there a way to see this, if it becomes necessary for what I'm trying to accomplish with the HDD/SSD?

I hope this information helps. Again, just to clarify: I want to move a pre-installed Windows 10 OS from an existing HDD onto a new SSD, and plan to keep both drives in the device. If any more information is necessary, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you!

P.S. I've seen other posts about this, but using different terms - reinstall, clean install, copy, clone, migrate, etc. If my situation fits a different term other than what I've described, please don't hesitate to point that out.

    :)

  2. Migrate OS to SSD

I cannot figure out how to move windows 10 os to new SSD. The C drive is not partitioned so the 1.8 TB drive is trying to migrate to the 500gb SSD, which it will not allow me to do. Is there a way to seperate just the OS from the C drive ?
