Windows 10: Minimizing window while dragging and dropping a file

While dragging and dropping a file from one window to another window/app the window that I'm dragging the file from does not minimize. Right now when ever I'm doing this I have to first position both windows so that I can drag and drop it but it would be much easier if the file is dragged out of the window, that window minimises so that I can drop it to the window or app. It specifically annoys me when I have to drag a file to specific area of an app which requires me to resize the window or put it in a corner where the window and the area where I want to drop it are visible. I'm not sure if t

Hi Charles,

the steps you suggested didn't work for me but, when pressing the escape key it somehow expanded the drive and by using drag and drop to the single file in the list worked.

In the past I could drag and drop multiple folders onto the drive on the network computer(s). Doing it on individual folders will take far too long and time consuming and is not an option.

Microsoft should be able to identify what is blocking it and issue a fix.

My machine is multi boot so tomorrow I will try with Windows 7.

Drag and Drop Windows / Files

In Windows 10, you could have an application open and maximized (such as a Word Document, PDF, etc.) and you could just drag and drop it to another area, such as the 2nd screen without any issues. As soon as you clicked to drag it, it would just minimize itself (not minimize as in close down to the task bar, but just become a smaller window and not maximized). However, in Windows 11, it doesn't work this way. You have to minimize the window first and then drag and drop it. I keep going to drag and drop an open, maximized file, forgetting that Windows 11 doesn't work this way and it's frustrating! Is there a way to drag and drop without minimizing the file first, like how it worked in Windows 10?

[Taskbar]

• Drag and drop is now supported on the Windows 11 taskbar. Quickly drag and drop files between app windows, by hovering over apps in the taskbar to bring their windows to the foreground. Try attaching a file to an Outlook e-mail by dragging it and hovering over the Outlook icon in the taskbar to bring the window to the foreground. Once in the foreground, drop your file into the e-mail to attach it. You can also customize your taskbar with your favorite apps from Start’s All apps list by dragging and dropping over the taskbar to pin them. You can also drag and drop to the desktop via “Show desktop” at the very right corner of the taskbar.
