Windows 10: Missing D: External Disk Drive

Hi, I've had my AlienWare PC for about 4 months now, and recently I can't find my external hard drive. My OS C: is still here, but My D: drive is missing, and I can't find it in File Explorer or Device Manager. Please help.

Installing to a second Drive. D: or external (Non Boot up Drives)

In this scenario, we would suggest you to perform these steps and check if that resolves your issue on both laptop and Desktop.

1. As usual install the game on the PC’s in
   C Drive.
   
2. Insert the external
   D drive to the PC.
   
3. Press Windows + I key from the keyboard to launch
   Settings.
   
4. Select Apps and click on
   Apps & features from the left pane.
   
5. Search for the installed game from the list on the right pane.
   
6. Single click on the game and select
   Move.
   
7. Select the D drive under
   Choose a drive where you want to move the game.
   
8. Restart the PC with the external drive connected and then launch the game.

D: Drive is missing.

Here is what we found out so far:

• You have one rather small hard disk of 120 GBytes
• The amount of disk space consumed by the partitions add up to 120 GBytes
• You do not have a second hard disk.
• Partitions might disappear but they never join existing partitions without human assistance.

If, as you say, you had a data partition then here are the explanations I can think of:

• Drive D: must have resided on an external disk
• There is a second disk but is unplugged or it hs failed catastrophcially
• You are thinking of a different PC.

 

Woke up to a missing D Drive

I understand your D drive is missing. Let me help you with this.

There are several reasons why the harddrive will not be detected, and these are the steps of troubleshooting I recommend:

Solution 1:

Step 1. Right-click on Start, click "Device Manager".

Step 2. Expand Disk driver and locate the hard drive which cannot be detected by Windows.

Step 3. Right-click on the disk and select "Update Driver Software" from context menu.

Step 4. If there are any updates, follow further instructions to update the disk driver.

Solution 2. Uninstall and reconnect the second hard drive

In addition to updating the disk driver, you can try to uninstall and reconnect the external hard drive to get Windows 10 detect it.

Step 1. Enter the Device Manager interface as solution 1.

Step 2. Double click Disk Driver to expand it.

Step 3. Right-click on the second hard drive and select “Uninstall”.

Step 4. Reboot your computer after uninstalling this disk is finished and plug in the hard drive again.
