Windows 10: Missing Drive After MBR to GPT upgrade

Recently upgraded to 5950x, gigabyte x570, win10 V21H1 I was able to change my c drive from mbr to gpt. Before this happened I was able to see all 5 of my hard drives. After reboot and correcting the bios from legacy to UEFI I can no longer see my second nvme drive. My ssd and 2 HDD + nvme c drive are all visible. Windows does not recognize the drive in device manager, disk manager, or diskpart commands. Bios sees it no problem as well . I've loaded into windows recovery by holding shift and rebooting. While in recovery mode I go to the terminal and diskpart now sees the drive. I exit diskpart and able to cd into the drive and see all my files. Ive gone back into the bios and have tried every combo of CSM, legacy, UEFI Only I could think of to see if changing that would yield results. I removed the nvme drive and put it into my daughters computer(3600 and asus b450) and it loaded it no problem at all. Removable drive details has the arrow to reference of what it is before being asked. TLDR: Missing drive visible in bios, windows recovery not visible disk/device manager.

1. You cannot convert mbr to gpt without data loss. otherwise, you can follow directions here:

FROM WINDOWS RECOVERY CONSOLE:

To change a master boot record disk into a GUID partition table disk using a command line

• 
  Back up or move the data on the basic master boot record (MBR) disk you want to convert into a GUID partition table (GPT) disk.
  
• 
  Open an elevated command prompt (right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator) and type diskpart. If the disk does not contain any partitions or volumes, skip to step 6.
  
• 
  At the DISKPART prompt, type list disk. Make note of the disk number you want to convert.
  
• 
  At the DISKPART prompt, type select disk <disknumber>.
  
• 
  At the DISKPART prompt, type clean.
  

2. I'd suggest converting your vista drive to a virtual machine, load that up on your windows 10 system and use a program like virtualbox to run it.

 

MBR to GPT problem

Hi,

As a side note... You can not split a partition and resolve the MBR to GPT problem..

The entire drive needs to be converted to either MBR or GPT..

 

Convert GPT to MBR

if you cant do it using Disk Manager, Try DISKPART in command prompt.

otherwise you will need to find a 3rd party format/paritition program, google around for one.



the only way to go from GPT to MBR is to remove all volumes / parititions from the drive.





EDIT, im farily certain that only XP PRO can read GPT drives, HOME edition cant.
Vista premium and Win 7 can both read GPT drives i think.... i know for sure that the ultimate editions can.
