Windows 10: Missing files after swapping disks between Windows 7 and Windows 10

Since a couple of months I experience the following problem over and over again:

I take a disk from my Windows 10 system to another computer (Windows 7 pro) in order to record audio. Before I take out the disk of the Windows 10 system I check the disk. No errors are found. Inserting the disk to the Win 7 system I get a message that the disk needs to be checked for errors. No errors are found. I record the audio. Afterwards all recorded files are available. No problem so far. I shut down the computer, take out the disk and insert it to my windows 10 system.

Now the trouble begins: the recorded folder and files are not visible. After a couple of minutes win 10 reports that the disk needs to be repaired. Allowing the system to do this results in the following: the folder is again visible and accessible but some audio files (sometimes all of them) have a zero file length. My Win 10 system now is happy with the disk state, no problem are found anymore but the files are gone...


This happens with numerous disks and several different windows 7 systems the I use for recording concerts. It is not limited to a particular disk or a particular windows 7 system.


Windows 10 version 1803 (build 17.134.407). All disk are internal SATA disks.

It seems that windows 10 is trying to repair something which does not need a repair. Can anybody help please?

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Installing Windows 10 using Windows 7 key

Nope, you need to install Windows 10 first and make sure the Windows 7 key is transferred to your Windows account after you've installed Windows 10 (not quite sure how that works). I missed the last step and I could not activate Windows 10 after a re-install... Microsoft seem to have done everything they can to make it a PITA. Also, it's technically too late to do this now anyhow, as the upgrade offer has expired. But KMSPico works quite well...

As for getting rid of Windows, delete the Windows folder.
