Windows 10: Missing harddrive space after trying to make a new partition

Hello I was attempting to make a new hard drive partition and when it was finished I was unable to access it and now it just says there is an additional 256gb taken up on my C: and I cant get to is. Does anyone know a way to recover that lost space?

Installing Windows

I'm trying to install windows with a new harddrive. My dell laptop wont accept it. I'm using a flash drive it has GTP partition style. The drive 0 partitions denies it. There is a MSR partition reserved. So do I delete all partitions to find space?

Hi, I recently switched back from Ubuntu to Windows and in attempt to format my harddrive, I redid my partition scheme to gpt. It deleted the partitions (They no longer show up on disk management or gparted) but it now thinks by 1TB harddrive is only 931.5GB
. Please Help! (Yes, I use ClassicShell)

 

Hi, where - on which disk- were you trying to create the new partition?

How were you creating it? What was there before? Were you shrinking a partition to make space for the new one, or creating it from unallocated space? What exactly did you do? How big was C: before you started?

I notice two things:
a. C: is shown as 249Gb and then 465Gb - those figures should be the same.
I assume that has something to do with the new partition to which you refer.
b. You have 2 EFI partitions- there's a second on Disk 1. You should only have two.
Was Windows at some point installed on the disk shown as Disk 1?

 

I would start by running chkdsk on C: drive. Open a Powershell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

chkdsk C: /f

Answer yes to the prompt about running it at restart, then exit and restart the computer. See if that fixes your size issue on the C: drive partition.

 

I was trying to make the partition on disk 0. I right clicked on the C: partition and selected shrink then I put in the 216Gb and It just reoved that space from my c drive and no new partition showed up. Everything that was on the screen shot is what what there before, nothing new showed up. C: was 465Gb before I started.

Hi suggest you have a look at your partitions with Minitool partition wizard for comparison.

You could try Align (rt click C:, Align). It will tell you if any alignment is needed.

If not, then try shrinking or extending C: a tiny bit, click Apply- a restart will probably be required.
Then check if the size of C: is reported consistently.

Could you clarify your comment on chkdsk- was the outcome successful as far as the file system check was concerned?


Personally I wouldn't attempt to touch C: with Disk Management, but maybe that's just me.

 

I completely agree with that statement, except I would add that I would not attempt to adjust ANY partition with disk management. I use MiniTool Partition Wizard to adjust all partitions. And @dalchina's suggestions of aligning with MiniTool Partition Wizard and/or adjust the size of c: drive just a little bit with MiniTool were what I was going to suggest as well.

 

Chkdisk worked as for as it went through and did everything it was supposed to, However it did not fix my error.

 

The minitool partition wizard was able to find the partition. That solved my problem, Thank you.
