Windows 10: modern standby problems entering to sleep

Laptop Dell XPS 7590 Windows 10 2004build.


I press the power button, laptop starts going to sleep, then if i was lucky enough when i close the lid after some time laptop stops responding to ping.

But in most cases laptop just not going to sleep at all. Then if i look to event viewer i see events:


Event 506: The system is entering connected standby

Reason: Power Button.


Event 507: The system is exiting connected standby

Reason: Lid.

Event 506: The system is entering connected standby

Reason: Lid.

Event 507: The system is exiting connected standby

Reason: Input Keyboard.


Interesting thing, event shows that was keyboard input, but how this could happen if the lid was closed, and i was closing it gently.

And i can not disable modern standby, cause it is a new "feature", so hibernate is the only choice ????

Any standards regarding apps behavior during Modern Standby?

I have a modern standby system which is a Dell. I noticed something the other day I had not noticed before and was wondering if applications are given some type of standard as to how they should behave when on a modern standby system.

The situation involves being in modern standby and an active sleep timer setting. I know modern standby systems do not sleep but it appears some applications pay attention when sleep timers are configured.

In my case this concerns iTunes and Groove music. My system is set to sleep after 30 minutes and when the lid is closed. The iTunes app will continue playing when the system enters modern standby (display dark) but will stop playing when the lid is closed
or when the 30 minute sleep timer expires.

However, Groove music will continue to play even if the lid is closed or the 30 minute timer has expired. I would think all apps should behave as iTunes does and pause when sleep timers are hit.. This type of situation may be involved in some complaints
regarding battery drain when the lid is closed or in modern standby. If and app was running which was not visible to the user, the app might continue to run and deplete the battery or cause the system to get hot when in a travel case.

Can't enable Modern Standby

You need an exclusively UEFI PC (without Legacy support) for Modern/Connected, at least it's what I've heard. I guess if that Z390 doesn't have it, I am not really expecting any consumer desktops to implement it, I assume it would require manufacturers to kinda rewrite their BIOS. It is also indirectly suggested on Anandtech that the feature depends on the onboard WiFi:

Personally I love my Ethernet cables and 1Gbit speeds, and WiFi would be the last thing I'd do to my PC, but I would like to test this feature when I buy a new PC, since Z370 is clearly out of question. Considering that Z390 basically has onboard WiFi and Z370 doesn't , it further solidifies this as a potential WiFi only feature. Maybe it's possible for the PC to switch to WiFi for Connected Standby and then back to wire after it wakes up? That would be nice.

Edit: there's also this:
"Modern Standby is only available on some SoC systems. When it's supported, the system does not support S1-S3."

Yeah... S3 is the "normal" standby. So if your firmware manufacturer supports that, it's bye-bye Modern? Ouch.
