    monitor Display Identities.

Hi, I have a AMD R9 280 video card. I am running Windows 10. I have a new LG 27" lcd desktop monitor, and a 40" Panasonic plasma wall mounted, for watching movies. Outputs from my vid card are hdmi out to lg, displayport out to hdmi in on my surround sound receiver that is connected to the plasma. My problem is when I start my computer the Bios post screen shows properly on my lg monitor, than when windows loads everything goes to my plasma, unless it is turned on. I am trying to figure out how to run my desktop monitor without having to turn the plasma on, and leave it running? I have tried switching cables to no avail, and also tried windows display settings, and amd radeon settings. Let me know if their is a solution, or if I have to buy a new card? I have installed the latest graphics driver 15.301.1801.1001.160203a.299101e Thank You Paul Smith

    :)

Windows 10 Login Screen not respecting primary display. Identity Issues?

My monitor is already set as my primary display. This does not affect the actually identity of the display. If an application launches and is configured to run on display 1 then if a different display gets assigned as display 1 that application will run
there regardless of your primary display. This also includes the login page and desktop icons.

The problem is that main display is not respected in all situations like the login screen. To resolve this the os needs to communicate display identity some other way like forcing the primary display to always be 1 or allowing user preference to be set identities.

    It is easy to replicate.

    1. Setup 2 displays and set display 2 as the main display.

    2. Turn off Display 2, Reboot and turn on display 2 after the post.

    3. Problem 1: Display 1 (non main display) will display login screen. Display 2 will be blank.

    4. Now shutdown and turn off display 1 and restart.

    5. Display 2 will now be display 1.

    6. Open a program or game on display 2 (now seen as display 1 by windows) and configure desktop icons on it.

    7. Shutdown, turn original display 1 back on and restart.

    8. Problem 2: desktop icons will now appear on display 1 and previous application will launch on display 1 instead of display 2 which is the main display.

This shows that display identities have some priority over "main display". Or at least something in the os or APIs peg activities to monitors based on its identity, and only use main display when a display preference has not already been set. When identites
change it confuses which display stuff should launch/show on.

Either displays need a unique, permanent identity regardless of whether other displays are on, or users need a way to setup the preference of which display is identity 1 when more than one monitor is present.

Hope that describes the issue thoroughly.

    monitor Display Identities.

From my thoughts i think only Display port supports multiple monitors outputs on a video card.

I don't think you understand the issue, this worked fine with a older 23" monitor, and doesn't work with the new 27" monitor my wife just bought me.

In display settings click on the square 1 or 2 that represents your computer monitor. You can click the identify link to tell if the monitor is 1 or 2. With the correct square selected for the computer monitor and see if "Make this my primary display" is checked. It needs to be checked, then apply.

  7. My guess is, because your surround sound receiver is in between, windows thinks there is a monitor there all the time. Set the PC monitor as main, as suggested above. Then press the Windows logo key *Start and the P key, then select PC only when your not using the Plasma. When you want dual screens press *Start + P and select Extend. Or second screen only if you want just the plasma. I put shortcuts on my taskbar for PC Only and Extend so I can switch to 1 monitor when gaming and back to 3 when done gaming.

    monitor Display Identities.

I like your solution, but it might be tricky for my 7 year old, who shares my computer. So I found dvi out from my card to svga in on my PC monitor works. Thanks

  9. What ever works in the end and gives you the end result you want. lol, my wife would be totally lost on my 3 display desktop PC. She won't even go near it. She knows just enough to use her laptop for Facebook etc and that's it.
