Windows 10: Monitor driver crashing Windows 10

I've had this issue across Windows 7, 8.1, and 10. I use 3 monitors. My graphics card supports two so I use a third USB monitor. Periodically after allowing monitors to sleep or playing a video - especially in Citrix all three screens go black, the speaker starts making a loud buzzing, and my drives all spin up like jet engines ready for takeoff. After the latest Win 10 updates, the speakers no longer buzz. My only option is to cycle the power hard reset. This happens 2-3 times a week.


I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, updating drivers it always says I have the most recent, and running Dell SupportAssist.


I have a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with 16 gb RAM, i7 CPU 860 running at 2.8 ghz not overclocked, Windows 10 Pro V. 1903 Build 18362.836. Monitors:

• BenQ GW2760HS on NVIDIA GeForce G5 220
• HP 2311 on Plugable UGA-2K-A
• LG E2340 on NVIDIA GeForce GT 220

I have 2 drivers for the HP: monitor.sys and HP_2311.icm. the second file is in the system32\spool\drivers\color directory. This hasn't always been the case. It depends on which monitor I have hooked up to the USB.


I've always had this hooked up to a USB 2.0 port.


This is difficult to troubleshoot as I have to wait some time before it finally crashes. I thought I had fixed it one time because I had no crashes for over a week but then it started crashing again.

Method 1: Update drivers.

I suggest you to update graphic drivers and check if it helps. Follow the steps given below.

• Press Windows key + X key and click on
  Device manager.
• Search for Display Adapters.
• Right-click on the graphics
  card and click on Update driver software.

You may also install the latest graphic drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

If the issue still persist, I suggest you to install the graphic drivers in compatibility mode and check.

Method 2:

Follow the steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode.

• Download the drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
• Right-click on the installer and click on "Properties".
• Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select previous Operating System from the drop down.
• Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.

Increase the window size step by step and watch your vga temps permanently.
What happens?
If it crashes, run at stock speeds as suggested before and retry.

P.S.: When your system locks, does the display signal turn off after a time?
Stuttering sound or no sound at all when freezing?
What X1800XT model do you own exactly?
