Monitors incorrectly identified as "Generic Monitors" in Device Manager

After cloning the C: drive in my Windows 10 computer Ryzen 7 5800X3D and RTX 3080 I installed the new SSD and a new RTX 4090. I then found that the Control Panel utility for setting up touchscreen monitors and the Settings utility for calibrating displays and touchscreens were both missing. I believe that this was because Device Manager was displaying both my main monitors and my two touchscreen monitors as "Generic PnP Monitor." I tried every troubleshooting step I could find by Googling the problem but nothing worked, including updating the nVidia driver to the very latest version. In despe

    Hello Angelica,

I would suggest you follow steps to update the monitor driver:

    Press Windows + X keys

    Choose Device manager

    Click on Monitors

Right click on ‘Generic PnP monitor’ and click on update driver

Tap on Browse my computer for driver software

Tap on Let me pick from a list of available drivers

Choose ‘Generic PnP monitor’ and tap on Next

When you are done please restart the computer.

    WIN 10 incorrectly identifying monitors

Hi thanks for the reply, Yes did all that also did the instructions in attached doc, which also didn't work. As soon as I plugged in the secondary monitor it became the primary????

The only thing that worked was to delete registry keys restart with main monitor attached and add a different secondary monitor a dell not the original HP secondary.

    Monitors disabled in device manager

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

For better clarity, please let us know:

    • When you say, “Whenever Windows 10 goes to sleep and then turns back on, all 3 monitor profiles are disabled” do you mean monitors doesn’t wake up from sleep?
    • Are you aware of any changes made to the computer prior to this issue?
    • Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? To check type:
winver in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit
      Enter.
    • What is the make and model of the computer?

I suggest you to check if there are any greyed out Monitors in Device Manager. To check refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + X, and select
      Device Manager.
    2. Click on View and select
      Show hidden devices
      .
    3. Expand Monitors and see if there are any greyed out devices.
    4. If you find any greyed out devices, right click on the device and select
      Uninstall device.

You can also try selecting the Automatic Driver Updates
    option from
    https://www.geforce.com/drivers
, this will automatically detect the drivers and download them.

    .

Alternatively, you can visit the computer manufacturer’s website and check if there is any BIOS update available. However, we recommend that you check with your motherboard manufacturer regarding BIOS update.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting
from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Let us know how it goes.
