Windows 10: More details of Microsoft’s rumoured modular Windows Core OS appears online

Microsoft is reportedly working on Windows Core OS, a modular version of the operating system which is supposed to run on all form factors ranging from dual-screen devices to full-fledged desktop and HoloLens. It’s also supposed to power Microsoft’s Surface Andromeda which is a device that made the rounds several times in the previous leaks.

A new discovery by Italian blog ALumia claims that Microsoft has already started developing apps for Windows Core OS. The new apps are reportedly designed to run on devices powered by Windows Core OS.

At the moment, the developers are allowed to create apps and games that are designed to run on any of the following platforms.

Windows.Desktop: The application can only be installed on PCs and tablets.

Windows.Mobile: The application can be installed only on Windows 10 Mobile (Windows.Mobile is to be considered nowadays obsolete and practically unused).

Windows.Team: The application can be installed only on Surface Hub.

Windows.Xbox: The application can only be installed on an Xbox console.

Windows.Universal: The application can be installed on all the devices listed above.

According to the report, the Dev Center which is a platform created by Microsoft for uploading digital content has recently been updated to allow select developers to load Windows Core OS apps.

The rumour has it that Andromeda will be able to run all UWP apps but at the same time, Microsoft is working on dedicated Andromeda apps with enhanced features supported by the dual-screen device.

Recently, the alleged language packs were published on the Microsoft Store confirming telephony features. It’s likely that Microsoft’s AndromedaOS (mobile composer) would boast phone capabilities as well as a call recording features.

Microsoft 'Windows Core OS' aims to turn Windows 10 into a modular platform for the future

Microsoft is taking the next steps in its "One Windows" vision with an internal project called "Windows Core OS" that turns Windows 10 into a fully modular platform and lays foundations for the future of Windows.

Windows is now over 30 years old, which is beyond ancient in technology years. As a result of this, Windows itself is encumbered by features, functions, and components that some devices today may no longer need. In an industry where new device types are being introduced all the time, Windows itself is too old and heavy to be able to adapt to those new devices (an example of which are smartwatches) quickly enough. As it turns out, Microsoft is aware of this and is working on something internally that looks to solve this problem.

Over the last several months, I've been talking to multiple sources about something internally referred to as "Windows Core OS" (originally Andromeda OS.) According to these sources, Windows Core OS (WCOS for short) is the future backbone of Windows and is a monumental step forward in making Windows 10 a truly universal OS. In short, WCOS is a common denominator for Windows that works cross-platform, on any device type or architecture, that can be enhanced with modular extensions that gives devices features and experiences where necessary.

What does this mean for me?

Windows 10 as it is today has a few different variants of itself. It's not one OS that's shared across devices. Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 desktop are two different variants of Windows 10, for example. Now, these different variants do share universal elements, such as OneCore and the Universal Windows Platform, but the OSs themselves aren't the same. WCOS removes these different variants and gives us a universal base that can be built upon. If you want Windows on a phone, instead of using Windows 10 Mobile, you would simply use "Windows 10" with components that make sense for a phone device. It's the next steps in Microsoft's modularity of Windows, which has been ongoing for years at this point.

Windows Core OS aims to turn Windows 10 into a modular platform

Honestly, modularity and flexibility during install would be good, Microsoft did the right choice when they transparently stated what the telemetry tools did, how, and ways to turn off stuff you don't use during setup, that is wise, why not extending that to many parts of the OS, making it more stable?

I mean, if components can integrate, but can independantly be used or uninstalled, doesn't that increase stability for the OS, rather than adding bloatware tied to the core?... If subsequent versions of Windows can be even better than 1703 (which is quite fast at use and boot times), that is certainly the right step.

Microsoft reveals more details of Windows Core OS

Microsoft's long rumored dual-screen Andromeda phone may never see the light of day, but the related "Windows Core OS" project or WCOS, is still underway, and according to a job vacancy posted on LinkedIn, it's all about Windows 10 devices and drivers.

The vacancy for a software engineering role based in Redmond, spotted by BleepingComputer, sheds some light on what Microsoft's priorities are with WCOS.

ZDNet's authority on Microsoft, Mary Jo Foley, has been tracking WCOS and related initiatives like OneCore over the years and notes it is Redmond's attempt to create a common base for Windows on numerous platforms by modularizing the OS so it can work on phones, tablets, laptops and PCs, IoT devices and the HoloLens.

WCOS isn't meant to run Win32 apps, but rather focuses on Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform apps for IoT, mobile, PC, Xbox, Surface Hub and HoloLens. Microsoft's other projects, C-Shell, or composable shell, aim to create a common shell that works on WCOS, while Polaris appears to be a desktop Shell based on C-Shell that will run on WCOS.

All of these mystery projects, including WCOS, are aimed at OEMs and developers rather than end-users so Microsoft hasn't revealed much about them.

The LinkedIn-posted vacancy is for a development manager of Microsoft's Device Platform team who will "define what should be done in modernizing our existing windows driver ecosystem as well as creating new products using Windows Core OS"...
