I still don't understand why some Recommended updates are selected by default and some are not (though still in the Important list), however unselecting the setting does move all the Recommended settings to Optional.

I think we are missing the main point in this discussion. My understanding was always that KBs will improve my system. But I fail to see how the KBs in question do that. They are pure marketing stuff - and that should have been dealt with differently. It puts the whole KB system in question.

  3. Sure does whs it really does when Optional updates morph to Important,
That one was the only recommended update and yes I know how to set my win update setting to where they are separated and recommended updates are listed with Optional ones,
The Important one was Optional = disappeared from the list and returned as Important,

I think you do not want to see it as it is.

The updates in question were "Recommended updates", not "Important updates". If and when you have selected to install Recommended updates as if they were Important updates, without your knowledge and specific permission, you have accepted that Microsoft might push an update to your Windows PC which is not important per se for the functionality of your computer and Windows, but recommended as far as Microsoft is concerned.

It is totally understandable and even acceptable that Microsoft as the maker of that already a bit outdated OS recommends their latest OS and you preparing for it instead. By accepting the fact that the recommended updates may be installed automatically and without your knowledge you have accepted the fact that Microsoft might recommend something you oppose.

  5. I recall an update that went out to Win7 and Win8.x that pushed a download Win10 to the users. I think it was an opt-in situation where only users who were in the Insider Program received it and only if they chose some option when they joined.

Without going into the minutiae of individual KBs, I'll suggest that some of the important updates supersede previous updates and in the case above, are very important.

I looked at the KB Wolfgang cited, but couldn't glean much from the article. I accept his word that it has the appearance of marketing a new OS.

MS has always rolled out "get ready for the next release" updates. Many do HW & SW pre-requisite checks on a machine and many just add things that will make the transition easier (migration tools).

To be honest, I thinks it is a few months too early to be updating Win7 and Win8.x machines with Win10 preparation updates. That assumes that Win10 RTM is in October, NOT in July - there's a lot of work yet to be done. If they want to test the Win7/Win8 update scenarios, MS can run those in their lab (I'm sure they are)

Kari, you are missing the point. I don't oppose anything. I just don't want updates on my system that are no updates but marketing actions. Those are PUPs in my book. And whether I stay on a legacy OS is my business. I don't need any MS 'guidance' in that respect.

For millions of users that is going to be a mouse trap. We will see all the complaints when people thought to update their Win7 or 8.1 system and ended up with a completely new OS. Wait and see.

KB's are "changes". That's all, they don't imply improvement, they are a method of change control.

All patches to the OS, be they "hotfixes", Service packs, security updates, or even patches that remove functionality (like the one that removed gadgets from Windows 7) are KB's. KB's are actually the Knowledge Base articles that document the change, and the files are named after them.

Of the 4 or so KB's associated with the Windows 10 rollout, 3 of them I believe are updates that modify the OS to make upgrading easier by prepping the OS components to a certain level. The 4th one is the one that does the "notifications" which is what people seem to complain about. Regardless, 3 of them are perfectly fine and are just maintenance patches, and don't do anything you might not want. You are free to not install the 4th one (or any of them really) and to set your system to not install Recommended updates as important.

Mystere, we can discuss this subject to death. But I wonder what you guys think why MS has put those KBs on our systems.

I think the main purpose is to get people to move to W10 asap. They don't want to see another W8 marketing scenario which would be a real possibility given that W10 could be viewed as a W8.2.

And Windows 8 was called Windows 7 SP2. And Windows 7 was called Vista SP2. We always get people who say "I don't see why this deserves a new version number". And, in fact, it seems that there won't be any new version numbers like that... MS is taking the OS X route most likely... Version 10.x forever...

I am not talking about the numbering system. I mean the overall appearance of the system. I would suspect that people who do not like W8.1 (which I think is a great system) may also have reservations regarding W10. But calling W8 a W7 SP2 is really far fetched. At least nobody could call Vista an XP SP4, LOL.
