How to: Enable or Disable Moving User App Data in Windows 10

How to Enable or Disable Moving User App Data to Non-system Volumes in Windows 10

In Windows 10, users can move their installed Windows apps from the Microsoft Store to another drive.

The default location is This PC on the Windows C: drive (system volume) in the %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApps (apps) and %LocalAppData%\Packages (user app data) folders.

If you like, you can allow or prevent users' app data from moving to another location when an app is moved or installed on another location.

If prevented, all users' app data will stay on the system volume, regardless of where the app is installed.

If allowed, then when an app is moved to a different volume, the users' app data will also move to this volume.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable users' app data from moving to another location when an app from the Microsoft Store is moved or installed on another location in Windows 10.

*Warning You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable moving user app data.

Move Users Folder Location in Windows 10

If not the best way to do that but at least the way I recommend:

    • "Empty" your user profile folders as much as you can, copying documents, pics, videos, music and all other personal data from all user profiles to external HDD. As following steps require you to relocate Users folder two times, the less data is left in user profile folders, the faster the relocation process. Important: Leave system folder AppData for each profile intact, do not empty / move its content!
    • Reverse the relocating, doing exactly as told in tutorial Method Two but this time relocating Users folder back to C: drive
    • Shut down the PC, replace the disk where you had Users relocated
    • Mount the new disk, boot to Windows, assign new disk the same drive ID letter than the old one had
    • Again, do as told in Method Two, now relocating Users to new disk
    • Restore the backed up personal user data from external drive to respective folders under each user profile

I think I'll put a list of people's favourite apps in the OP, starting with my own until I get some suggestions, but you can take a look at the Windows Phone app store at the top apps to see what's popular Windows Phone-Apps – Microsoft Store

You are both now added, welcome! *Toast :toast:

Second, run a disk check for errors.
Then, start playing with moving his user profile to a new one or trying to repair it.
And, you may want to look at some of the tutorials on the web for doing an in place upgrade without losing data, apps, or programs for his version of OS.

  5. how to move data on pc hd to external hd and back to repair lost admin password in windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. Let me help you.

    • Are you able to copy and paste the data from one location to another?

    • Do you receive any error code while moving the files to external HD?

I suggest you to go through the following troubleshooting steps and check if it helps.

Kindly try to start your computer in Safe mode from the Windows Recovery Environment.

Please refer to the below link to start the computer in Safe mode.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode

Note: The steps for Windows 8.1 applies to Windows 10.

Once you have entered into the Safe mode then, open Command Prompt and enable Built in Administrator.

Follow the below steps to enable Built in Administrator:

    • Open Command Prompt from
      Windows Recovery Environment
      .

    • Copy and paste the below command and press Enter.

      net user administrator /active:yes

    • Close the Command Prompt.

    • Try to login though Built in Administrator and change the earlier password or you can create new user account.

Keep us posted on the issue. We will be happy to assist you further.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”
