  1. Most reliable way to network computers directly?

    Hi folks,

Sorry about this, i'm a bit of a networking noob!

I need to network multiple computers together for use with Unreal Engine's nDisplay technology
(nDisplay Overview | Unreal Engine Documentation)

Because there is timing data passed between master and node machines, i have the feeling this is best done with a wired as apposed to a wifi solution.

So i have a couple of questions:

Firstly, is that correct? Is there greater delay or lag with wifi? And is wifi less robust?
I mean, with laptop wifi, sometimes the connection drops out...... i have a feeling this happens more frequently with wifi than an ethernet wired desktop machine.

And if i want to wire the computers directly via the ethernet ports, is this as simply as just buying a network switch and doing it? Or is there something else i need to know about?

I need to get this working very well and reliably, so this is the main priority, not necessarily getting it done for the lowest possible cost.

    Thanks in advance!

    :)

transfer files between computers on a home network

I don't know why this is so hard to do but I would like to transfer files between a desktop PC running windows 10 pro and a laptop running windows 10 home. I would like to transfer files in both directions. Both computers are on the same home network and are connected wirelessly.

Could some one provide either specific step by step instructions on how to do this (I googled and found a countless list of instructions that don't work)

or a link to a reference.

    Thanks,

I don't know if this is possible but it would be nice to see the computer sending the desired file in the explorer file manager of the computer receiving the desired file and then under the computer see a list
    of shared files and folders.

Again, this seems like such a reasonable way of sharing files and folders. Shouldn't there be a simple way to do this?

One computer cannot access other network computers.

So I've tried every troubleshooting step I know:
    • Double checked that Net Bios was enabled
    • Ran a bunch of network commands:
      • flushed DNS
      • registered dns
      • pinged and located the named computers successfully
    • Reset my router to factory settings

Nothing works when I try to access via explorer. I'm still baffled by the fact that every other computer can access each other AND access this computer. It's just the outgoing connection from this machine that doesn't work.

    Any thoughts?

Most reliable way to network computers directly?

    Unable to browse network computers.

We suggest creating a new administrator user account by following the steps
    here
. Make sure to use the same network settings that you used for your other computers, then check if you can connect to the home network. Since you also mentioned that Windows 10 was freshly installed on this particular computer, have you already downloaded
the latest updates? The latest build for Version 1607 is 14393.1715, and 15063.608 for Version 1703. You can check the build version of your computer by following these steps:

    • Click Start.
    • Type winver and press Enter.

If you don't have the latest updates, you can follow these steps to install them:

    • Click Start.
    • Go to Settings.
    • Click Update & security.
    • Click Check for updates.

If that doesn't work, we'd like screenshots of the network and file sharing settings of the computer that doesn't work, and the settings of one of your other computers that can connect and share files properly on the home network.
