Windows 10: Mouse pointer and keyboard freeze when pluggin in external hard drive

Hi guys, so as I say in the title I have this very big, annoying problem.

On my new PC (HP Omen 2020, i7-10750h, Nvidia RTX 2070, 16GB RAM) when I connect an external hard drive (precisely an WD My Passport Ultra, 3TB) I get occasionally mouse and keyboard freezes.

Practically, the system becomes unusable. The mouse and keyboards works, they even show in device manager, but from time to time (too often) they "freezes": mouse pointer freeze, and it won't respond to my input, and keyboard too, if I type something it will not respond.
It's like if the pc isn't receiving their commands in this "freeze" time. Then, after some seconds it starts working again.
However is just a mouse and keyboard problem, the pc is well responsive: if I use the touchpad in the "mouse-freeze-time" the pointer will respond to the touchpad commands, but if I use the mouse it stays still.

First I thought this was a behaviour due to bad drivers, or something related to my new PC, the fact that it has USB 3.1 ports.

But then I've noticed that this fact happens only when I connect my WD Hard Disk (which is USB 3.0) to my pc.

I've tried some stuff online, suggesting to update drivers, change some windows settings, but with no success.
My guess is that the hard disk and the mouse-keyboard does interfere with each other in some ways. I guess that it's a software problem, at driver levels maybe, not a physical one.

I repeat again that when the mouse doesn't respond, I've tried to use the touchpad on the notebook, and it does work. So it's not a windows freeze, it's just the device (mouse-keyboard-receiver) that doesn't respond.

The mouse and keyboard are from Logitech, bot connected with the Unifiying receiver (a wireless receiver they provide for the mouse and the keyboard). Model: MX Anywhere 2S for the mouse, K360 for the keyboard.

Please, help me solve this problem, monday I start taking my engineering class lessons from MS Teams, and I need my pc up and running and well responsive (I need to access data from the hard disk while I take classes).

The Mouse Pointer (THE OLD ONE?)

Hi Amir,

Are you using an external mouse or the touch pad mouse? You can change the way how your mouse pointer looks by following these steps:

1. Press Windows key on your keyboard, type Change your mouse settings and select the search result.
2. On the window that would appear, click Additional mouse options.
3. On the Pointers tab, under Scheme, click
   Windows Default (system scheme) on the drop-down menu.

Let me know if there are improvements.

 

External Hard Drive

Hi John,

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

If you can't find external hard drive on Disk management than the next step is using the diskpart via command line, please follow the steps below:-

On the keyboard hit ((Windows logo key + R key)) than type ((CMD))

Now the windows command line will appear, the next steps is to type ((diskpart))

After that type ((list disk)) to show you the list of hard disks with partitions

If you found your external hard drive one of the list than you need to type ((select disk number)), note: the number is a disk number

Once you selected the hard disk or partitions than type ((clean))

than type ((create partition primary))

than type ((select partition 1))

than type ((active))

than type ((format fs=ntfs quick))

than type ((assign))

last type ((exit))
