Windows 10: Move internal Windows 11 install to external enclosure

I have a 2 year old ultrabook where the M.2 NVMe drive slot or controller has gone bad drives are not recognized by the BIOS. The M.2 drive itself is fine and fully functional. However, as this M.2 slot on the motherboard is the only one place to attach internal storage, the notebook is essentially rendered useless by this motherboard component failure. It is cost prohibitive to repair the notebook.Rather than trashing the notebook, I could use it as a stationary PC for other purposes using an external drive. It obviously would be slower, but it would work. My overwelming preference is

Internal Drive+Enclosure or External Drive

Hi, I'm not very familiar with storage solutions so I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I'm looking to buy a 1TB+ drive for backup. External drives seem like more elegant solutions but when I looked on Newegg many reviews seem to suggest that they are not long lived (e.g. break within weeks/months). Is this true? If so, are internal drives + enclosures better? Or do any of you have better solutions that I don't know about (like I said I'm not that familiar with the storage department). Thanks.

step 1: try with a different USB cable

step 2: take the drive out of the enclosure and connect it internally to your PC

quite likely the cable or enclosure has died. if you're re-initialising the disk you might actually be erasing it... so dont do that.

im looking for some external hard drive enclosure recommendations

im looking to buy an enclosure because a hdd and enclosure is way cheaper than the assembled external drives they sell.

thing is to know whats the best to buy so here are my questions:

whats the best internal interface? (IDE, SATA, or SATA 2) - HDD connection

whats the best external interface? (SATA, SATA 2, eSATA, or USB 2.0) - PC connection

whats better to have if its only being used as a windows restore drive? (fan or fanless)

is aluminum case better than plastic or does it really matter?

i was hoping to get a nice external drive for about $20 but no more than $30 + shipping
and i will just ghost a clean install of windows with all my files, games, and programs installed then its back in the box and i'll put it in the closet untill needed for a format and reinstall.
