    "Moveable" shortcuts / symbolic links

Full disclosure - I do not have an IT background, and am trying to find a way forwards as our IT department has been unable to advise on this.I have a directory Directory1 with several sub-folders and files on a remote server. There is a shortcut to a file let's call it File1 at the top of the directory, so it can easily be accessed.Directory1 is a template directory - it, and all of its contents is copied to other locations on the remote server and other servers regularly. When this happens, the copied shortcut still points to File1, rather than the copied version. I need the shortcut i

  2. Is there any significance in the difference between a symbolic link (MKLINK /D) and a shortcut (File Explorer >New >Shortcut)?

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

    Version 10.0.19044 Build 19044

I'm referring to links to folders.

When I drop a file onto either, the same thing appears to happen - the file is created in the target folder.

Should I be concerned that there is a difference in the two link types?

I have been researching the difference between the symbolic link and the shortcut. It seem the the shortcut operates a two stage process where the LNK file has to be interpreted in order to create the process that allows it to behave as a shortcut behaves. Whereas the symbolic link, so I read, is a single step process to create its behaviour.

  3. Erroneous symbols at the bottom left corner of desktop icons

I'm running Windows 10 with the latest updates. A few days ago, the icons for objects on the desktop changed appearance. The icons are correct but
all have a symbol at the bottom left corner:

    • Shortcuts show the correct shortcut symbol
    • All files erroneously show a shortcut symbol
    • Almost all folders erroneously show a shortcut symbol
    • Some folders erroneously show "X"

The icons for files and folders (including the Desktop folder) displayed using File Explorer are all normal.

    I would appreciate any suggestions.

Symbolic link (Junction/s), how-to mklink? Please help with Junction?

Hi all, having been a member at Seven then Ten forums for a fair while I'm hoping to find a straight answer here..? Apologies in advance if this is too verbose.
Windows 10 system booting from (UEFI) NVME with 2xSSDs + 2 MHDDs for storage...

An application (Xperia Companion) which will not let me select or personalise the location for saving backups of my cellular phone data...

Think I found a fair definition of the differences at the Computer hope site which would suggest it's a Junction I need:
I want Xperia companion to save backups to F:\Sony Backups NOT the default C:\Users\GD\Documents\Sony. Would the Junction (link) allow me to to fulfill my wants and could someone please demonstrate the mklink commands needed?

    with thanks and regards,
    Dave
