  1. Moved from Mac to Windows - any advice for these problems?

    Hi all. Recently - and somewhat reluctantly - moved from a 2012 non retina Macbook Pro (old i7, 8gb RAM) to Windows as a career shift meant I needed to us Windows software which didn't work well under Boot Camp.

    New laptop is much better spec'd than the Mac - Lenovo P1 gen 2, 9750 i7, T2000 graphics, 16gb RAM. The Mac however coped fine with office tasks and even light CAD, and was never ever sluggish. Didn't like video editing though...

    First thing I did was do a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro without all the OEM crap, then update drivers and firmware. It's been a while since I've used Windows properly but I think I've got used to most stuff by now.

    However, there's a few problems which I'm guessing are caused by a setting somewhere I don't know about. Any help would be much appreciated.

    1 - when calling up the Search from the taskbar, sometimes instead of popping up over the active window like the Start Menu, it blacks out the whole screen and half the screen is the Search. Happens maybe 1 in 10 times.

    2 - Search intermittently takes a long time to pop up, 2-3 seconds, and then keystrokes take a few seconds to register. Spotlight used to be instant on my old Mac, no matter how bogged down the CPU was. I've run all the troubleshooters and done the indexing thing but no improvement

    3 - Think this is a Lenovo fault, but when I have a second display attached to the HDMI and the internal display is off, graphics are very, very jerky. Can't play back videos in VLC or Media Player and scrolling is choppy. Looks like an integrated/discrete graphics switching issue, but all drivers are up to date and I've reinstalled them.

    Thanks for your help!

    Newbie needs advice moving Win8.1 ==> Win10

    In your shoes I would
    1. Take a backup of the OS drive with Macrium Reflect, as suggested
    2. Download the ISO and do an Upgrade install (step 7 in this tutorial)
    Macrium gives you a way back if the upgrade doesn't work, and I also think that doing an Upgrade install is probably likely to be your quickest route to being activated on Windows 10 by the deadline.

    Once activated, you can consider doing a clean install later but without the time pressure.

    Run HDtune (free version) on you hard drive. but most likely that the problem. You can also test your memory with Memtest86 as suggested above
