Windows 10: Movies and TV casting audio but no video

I was able to cast both audio and video for a few days, but now its only allowing audio. The app itself cant find the Chromecast but google chrome allows me to cast my screen and then the app only gives audio now. Every other app allows me to cast both video and audio from their website.What setting has been changed that isnt allowing the app to see the chromecasts?

Movies and TV app

My configuration:

a windows10 pc running movies and tv app

The app was able to cast to my smart TV up until today

Smart TV is a Sharp 55" with Roku

I start a movie

the movie starts in the Movies and TV app window on my PC

I select to cast the movie to my TV (above)

The app shows my TV and says it is trying to connect

The little blue dots start to move from left to right

(this does not stop and nothing appears on my TV)

alternately and formerly

(the window on my pc displays "unknown error occurred")

Previously when I tried to cast my TV would display a message saying it was being cast to and asked for permission to accept.

When I accepted I was able to watch the movie on my TV.

This is not happening now.

I've reset the application and run several of the troubleshooting suggestions on the web.

cast to device failing on certain files

I'm using 'cast to device' to play a video file to my Panasonic VIERA smart tv. On some files, I get "unable to play file. File read error". This is troubling in several aspects--- I can play the video on the my windows 10 laptop using VLC with no issues.
If I use Windows Media Player or 'Movie & TV' the video plays, but there is no audio. VLC reports the audio codec is DTS audio.

If I try to play the video via Plex on a Firestick, the video plays fine, but again, no audio. I've tried to use VLC to stream the video to the tv, but no lluck there either.

How can I fix this issue? It is so frustrating that I can get video only via several means (WMP, movies/tv, and PLex) but no audio... and that stream via 'cast to device' gives file read error.

What mechanism/protocol does Win10 use for 'cast to device'? UDP? RTSP? When I try using cast feature of VLC player, I get nothing--no errors, no video, no audio. I'm trying to stream to the IP address, port 8080 of the TV (as reported by file explorer--ie
192.168.1.6:8080).

Suggestions?

 

Difficulty casting from Win10 PC to Sharp Roku TV

Ive posted before and come up with an annoying work around but I still need help with a permanent solution.

My configuration:

Win10 PC 64 bit

Win10 Home

Version 1903

OS Build 18362.449

RAM 16GB

Intel core i7 3770K cpu @ 3.50GHz

Sharp 55" Roku TV

I've been having trouble casting from "Movies and TV" app to the TV

• When right clicking on the video file and selecting "Cast to Device" says no devices found.
• When I run the video in "Movies and TV" I click on the lower right hand of the screen and select "Cast to Device" it says its trying to connect but is not able to or says unknown error.
• It is at these times when in Windows settings->Devices under Other devices is shows my TV as Not connected

BUT

When I remove the device from Windows settings->Devices under Other devices and then

• Go to Bluetooth & other devices->Add Bluetooth or other device->everything else
• I see my TV
• I select my TV

The screen says Ready to go

The TV shows it is waiting for a response

• I accept the connection
• The TV shows the pear screen
• The TV then says Starting video from... <the name of my PC>
• The loading bar does not advance
• (at this point I haven't even started a video yet)
• if I do start a video the same above happens with no video being cast.
• eventually the TV returns to whatever it was doing before.

The next time I try this I have to remove the TV from Other devices again and add it again using Add Bluetooth or other device

Still no casting actually takes place
