Windows 10: Moving a digital licence

Hello!


I recently had to change out my motherboard on my computer and ended up having to reinstall windows as it kept giving me the blue screen of death. I have a digital license for windows that I can see on my account for my computer (I was told i should ensure I have this before doing any changes that might anger windows_ but when I try and get windows to use it by selecting my computer it says "We can't reactive windows on this device. Try again later".


How do I get windows to use its digital licence?

VM's. Moving to different HDD's and Digital Licences

Just a note to people who perhaps have upgraded to W10 from say W7 and then move to a different HDD when they upgraded from W7 to a W10 VM.

KEEP the original W7 image . You can always create a new licensed W10 system from that if everything goes pear shaped.

The first VM will be fine -- you'll get a digital licence.

Now if you try and move the VM to say an internal SSD from a networked HDD by just copying / cloning the VM either by Clone from vmware or copy the folder with File explorer the digital licence will FAIL.

What you have to do in this case is use something like MACRIUM to backup the VM as per a REAL machine. Then create a NEW VM on the SSD, and then boot from an ISO (the bootable recovery medium from MACRIUM) to restore the image.

Then it's all fine.

(This is for VM's ceated with VMWARE workstation / player).

Revoking Digital Licence -- possible ????

Digital licences are sort of half way between oem and retail. You can transfer them to a new device (regardless of original licence status) but it is not unlimited. They can only be transferred three time (At last within a short period. I have never tested doing it weeks apart). Also, digital licences cannot be transferred between virtual machines and physical machines.

Full Retail keys do not have the above restriction albeit telephone activation may be needed periodically to transfer the licence (just a security check by MS to avoid wholesale piracy).

It is alleged you cannot transfer between laptops and desktops, but I cannot verify that - I have seen conflicting evidence to suggest that is "hit or miss".

I think of digital licences as "Restricted Retail" as opposed to "Full Retail".

reactivation of windows 10 after hardware changes doesnt work.





to add I had nothing but problems since upgrading for free my wifi adaptor failed so I had to purchase another. then my ethernet port failed. so was forced into probably purchasing a new mb next step up from the failed one ( possibly because of poxy windows
10 upgrade)

Also I thought when I upgraded so called "digital licence" to win 10 I no longer needed my windows 7 disc and key so binned it.

next step was to put old motherboard which is linked to digital licence. back in and reinstall correct version of windows to match my digital licence worked windows activated! ffixxed

now to change my motherboard back to the non faulty one..... and try to reactivate...…………..!!!
